carbon exhaustion

how long can you use carbon before it is exhausted?

I am using Kent carbon; it's working great, but am not sure when I should trash it and replace it with a new batch.

thanks

Carbon will last until it is saturated with impurities. Some tanks will use it up in a week or 2 others a couple months.

I can tell when mine is getting a bit sour by tank smell and color. As soon as I notice any yellowing or more than normal smell from tank, new carbon time. (4 to 8 weeks typically with a 1/2 lb per 100G of water volume)

There is a carbon test kit but I have no idea how accurate it is or how you would test carbon except by perhaps titration of some kind

Thanks Randall!

If I am trying to remove the yellow (actually, it's green water-check my gallery), how long should I run a batch? It has been running for a week now and I am getting amazing results!

I run carbon continously. Some say take it out but I have always just left a batch in the tank all the time. As far as the green water goes, I would think pods would do a better job than carbon. The green is algae and that comes from nutrient in the water and light.

What kind of water did you use? I have never had that happen before. (green water that is) Did you happen to use tap water? or dump maybe a lot of food in the tank?

use ro/di water. The food is fed by an automatic feeder (i guess it is possible that it somehow dumped a bit too much food).

I think that light may have been the issue. Sunlight started to get stronger about the time that this happened. BUT, it still would not be as strong as the lighting the tank will eventually have.

automatic feeder = trouble Perhaps you should get on some water changes? :)

Even if the light changes, there should not be so much nutrient in the water to cause this type of an algal bloom. (well unless green water is your goal)

oddly enough, I did a 200g water change and it made no difference. As far as dilution goes (i thought it would have atleast diluted the green). anyhoo, the carbon seems to be doing the trick. what i should have done is bottled the green and sold it to all the sps reefers. could have made a killing!

on another note, a 3 degree temp swing is okay right? the tank goes from 78-81 deg.
