Carbon use in a Reef Aquarium

I have successfully (in my opinion) created my own personal reef right in my living room for a little over a year now, and my question was is the use of carbon recommended? Still to this day I haven't put any carbon what so ever in my tank as chemical filtration, but recently and considering it. What are some of the advantages to those who use it, and disadvantages. I have read online about alot of reefers who opt not to use carbon. But at the same time I've heard/read that carbon will diminish trace elements and other things. Basically I'm asking if it is a good idea to add carbon to a system, or is it a waste of time and money? Thanks!

I run carbon 24/7, but if you don't use it and it's working for you, then keep doing what you're doing!

I agree with you, my system is running good without carbon, but I was looking for something to boost the clarity.(not that I'm having a problem) Just basically tinkering, and wondering if there are advantages to products out there that I am not using. Thanks for your reply though!

I use carbon 24/7 in my HOB filters. I've even added more carbon than the filter inserts I bought offer in them, with my emporer's their is an extra slot for what ever you want to add their, for what ever you might need. I bought these plastic cages that slide right in and I put eithetr extra carbon, or phosban from seachem, or even some nitrate killer from seachem too. I change it out every now and then to something new. But I like the use of carbon in my tank.

i use a cup in a mesh bag as passive filtration I change it out monthly. seems to clear the water a bit and also gives me peace of mind if something were ever to get in the tank ie airborne cleaners ect. not t worried about the trace element thing water changes counter act that if it's an issue

I toss a little carbon in a ladies' kneehigh into my sump when there's been something nasty let loose (a rabbit eating a load of caulerpa, eg.) But if you run carbon a lot, you need either water changes or supplementatary micro-nutrients, because it will start pulling those if left in too long.
