Carpet Nem on its way, Need advises

:bounce3:For what ever the reasons, I don't seem to be able to keep anemone happy in my 120 Gs SPS dominated tank. in 2010, I introduced about 4-5 anemones (not at once) and the only one that is doing well is the Mini Maxi nem.

Anyway, I want to give it another try and don't want to lose this one either. So, I need all the tips and advises I can get.

Thank you

What kind of carpet? Haddoni are quite easy to get a healthy one and thrive. Gigantea are almost all ways poor in shipping and struggle to survive.

I have to disagree about it being easy to get a healthy S. Haddoni, have seen too many threads on them coming in in poor conditions, and have experienced that myself too many times.

But, some more info on your tank would be helpful, and what type of anemones you tried in the past (( and how long they lasted ))

^. Getting a healthy carpet to begin with is hard enough period! Most are poor shippers. Let us know which species you are getting.

I'm sure I’m preaching to the choir here but if you're not absolutely sure of the anemone species get a good picture of the base and mouth. post it on here and these experienced fellows can give u a pretty solid ID.

Also, when are you receiving the nem?

it's a Haddon's Carpet Anemone Neon Green. You are right on the poor shipping. Most Anemone I got through shipping about haft dead by the time it gets to me.

Trex,
My tank spec is lasted under my Thread. as for lighting, I run 48 " 6xT5 pluse 1 48" blue LEDs. My current setup is SPS dominated, and they are happy in the tank. The only anemone I have and during well in a Mini Maxi nem.

Agree, the nem is Haddon's Carpet Anemone Green

Also, when are you receiving the nem?

Will get the picture when the Nem arrived.

Thanks everyone!

The Green carpet Nem will be here tomorrow. I hope it's in good health.

Q: How long should I slow drip this guy?
and do I need to turn light off?

I would temp float for about a half hour (( +/- depending how cold the bag's water is )). I would drip acclimate for an hour (( +/- depending on the salinity difference )).

As for the lights, I would leave them on their normal schedule, and use 3 layers of windowing screening b/t the lights and the tank. Then I would remove one layer every 5-7 days.

By any chance was it the neon green carpet which was posted on divers den last week? That was a nice looking one.

Ocellaris,

Yes that was. I hope it looks as nice as the picture. Those guys seems care more on their live stocks.

I will post picture tomorrow when it gets here.

Thanks

I'm sure you know already, but just in case - S. haddoni are sand-dwelling anemones and will wander until they can find a place to dig in - especially since most sps tanks these days have very little sand or no sand at all. Assuming it arrives in healthy condition, I recommend the following, and this is what I do with all sand-dwelling anemones (LTAs, Haddonis, etc.):

Get a 6-8" length of 3" diameter pvc and glue a cap on the end. Fill the pvc with sand, and once acclimated, prop the pvc tube and anemone upright and allow the 'nem to bury its foot. Once it has dug in, you can easily move it to wherever you think looks nice.

Don't like the look of the pvc tube? Pile rocks around it. Oh, you want it on the side of your tank where you can't pile rocks against the glass? Glue some green star polyps on the tube, and let them take off (trust me... the carpet will keep them in check...) or some beautiful encrusting monti.

I really am surprised that more people don't use this method - it has been a wonderful technique for me for the last 10 years.

Below is a pic of my tank with carpet in the tube and star polyps covering it:

Mike, can you elaborate a bit more on the PVC? Are you saying place the carpet in the tank attached to the PVC so that the PVC can be buried or bury the PVC first and then place the nem over the PVC in hopes that it buries its foot and attaches to the PVC.

BTW, looking forward to your Sooners coming to Tallahassee next season. Hopefully, we will be a little better prepared than this last season :). Oh and incredible carpet and tank all around!

Stand the pvc with cap on bottom upright/vertical in the tank with the hole facing up (sand should already be in the pvc). You might need to lean it up against the glass, support it with a rock or two, etc. After anemone is acclimated, place it with its foot down on top of the hole and let it slowly dig in - if the 'nem is small enough, perhaps you can gently "help" it down the tube; it will likely displace some sand that comes out of the tube. After it has sufficiently dug in, you can then lay the pvc tube on its side wherever you want in the tank.

Many pvc caps are rounded on the end, but I have seen a few 3" that are flat, which should help the cause.

Both my S. Haddoni and M. doreensis (LTA) dug down within just a few minutes, but you might need to be prepared to leave it for a few hours, perhaps a day if your anemone is stubborn.

Of all the games on our schedule next year, that one @ FSU scares me the most - even more than Texas. I'm thinking there will be some revenge factor, and while your new QB is young, he has shown flashes of being able to make some good plays.

I heard from several OU fans that the FSU fans who went to Norman last year were nothing but classy. I dearly hope we return the favor - sadly, I won't be able to make it...

Cheers
Mike

If I remember correctly that neon green one was 11" in diameter or maybe that was the striped one. If it is going to be anything like the one I received it will be bigger than that, mine said 4-6" and when it arrived it was probably 12-14". Also Check for Ammonia in the bag. The first nem that LA sent me was actually the wrong one and there was high ammonia content in the bag. The Haddoni they sent did not have any ammonia and all went somoothly.

Its here

Its here

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. As promised, the Haddoni Nem is here! I floated the bag for about 40 minutes and slow drip the specimen for almost 2 hours. It's in the main tank and not yet attaches itself into the rock and sand. I also took water samples so that you guys can better help me with this process.

AS of 1/24/2011

S.G 1.025 Hanna
Ph ~7.7-8.0 Salifert
Alk 7.4 dKH Salifert (out of curiosity, I tested the Alk level from water that was in the bag and it reads 10.9 dkH!) so I raised the Alk level to 8.0 dKH.
Cal 400 Salifert
Mag 1410 Salifert
Phospate 0.0 Hanna
Nitrate 0.0 Salifert

No I did not forget... :)

Should I be worry?

Wow, very nice, it seems to be in pretty good shape considering it went through the whole shipping process. The mouth doesn't look too bad. How big would you say it is? If I remember correctly LA said it was around 13 inches in diameter?

I recieved a green haddoni from divers den a few weeks ago but unfortunatly it didn't make it. The anemone discharged waste into the bag, which polluted the water heavily, and it never recovered.

Best of luck

For it just being shipped, I wouldn't be too worried. My red one look similar when I was acclimating it, and even was that way for the first day in the tank. After a water change and some fresh carbon the mouth was tightly closed.
