Cat takes a dip. Tank crashes

Several times in the past 2 weeks I have asked for help with coral and fish dieing. Many of you offered suggestions and I tried most all of them number one being change water and I did! 50% for 3 days in a row. With no improvement. Then Monday I saw the water was cloudy , the fish were all on the bottom of the tank moving in slow motion and my prized Bubble gum monster was melting down the Rock and the blue tubbs were closed to the point of looking like a landing strip. I texted 4 friends, two answered immediately "on my way" the other two said what's wrong. Tom got here first and entered the house rolling up his sleeves. He said to get the zip locks and the styrofoam boxes and started saving any coral that still had some life. Jan and Mike got here and started with two fish nets and two kitchen colanders rounding up fish. I started making up a QT tank. When my husband asked me if I had told Tom about Gizmo our cat? I was a little miffed , we are saving my tank and he wants to tell cat stories. Tom said what about the cat? I told them that a week earlier my Persian claimed the ladder and took a flying leap into the tank. At the same second Tom and my husband yelled AMMONIAED by the cat, that explains why my numbers were strange but ammonia was off the chart. It is Friday night and all three of my friends have called, texted and sent pictures of my corals that they adopted and stopped over to look at my empty tank. Corals they took are doing fine the Tubbs Blue is questionable. Every fish they scooped up is fine 5 of them were tangs and we got no ick. (I ran a small uv in the qt tank.). I can never never be able to thank those very special friends, and Big Kenney from Tallahassee that told mike to put in PRIME. Please everyone get a bottle, it neutralized the ammonia immediately guarantee it because in all the mucky
water we missed 5 fish and the next morning all 5 were swimming and still are tonight with all of their other surviving tank mates, Thank you for reading my babblings and for taking your time out to offer advice to a 69 year old Granny with a 125 gal glass box that holds liquid and is surrounded by what should be an illegal amount of extension cords and a ladder that the cat uses for a diving board. Friends check your numbers and your other pets. Bubba Shirl

I have read many stories of cats peeing in tanks causing trouble as well. Best of luck on your tank recovery

Oh wow! One of our cats slipped halfway into the tank and clawed her way up the overflow (clawed the GSP right off) but thankfully didn't pee. It never even occurred to me that could happen. There's a screen cover now but still, good to know. Glad you got it all sorted out and sorry for the damage!

So glad things are turning around. Had a bird that liked to dive in and out of my tanks once in a while. But never a diving kitty! And Persians are so fun. I must admit I did laugh. And I am glad I insist on full covers. :lmao::ape:

I use prime in emergencies. Quarantine tanks are usually the emergency. And then use seachems ammonia alert tag to tell if their are still bad ammonia in the tank.

Another cat tip for ya. If you happen to have sand in a bucket make sure it is covered. There is a good chance you will find a surprise inside.
