Has anyone had a horrible dealings with this company?

I ordered an ultra reef fixture assembly from this company in early Febuary and was told it would be about 15 days before it would ship. I order a fixture 2 x 250 watt Metal halide with 2 x 55 watt pc lamps, Moon lights and dual cooling fans. My assembly took 45 days to get built and shipped. When I recieved the assembly it was all smashed to bits on both end caps they did not ship my legs I had paid for so I called the company and was givin the run around and they finally, shipped me 2 new endcaps that were not drilled for cords or switches, a new fan for 1 side, (they forgot to add replacment wire nuts so I could change the end caps) and the missing legs, The ballast came 5 days late. I go to install the replacment parts (remember I just paid 714.00 for this unit) and I have to spend a few hours of my time to install parts now and when I go to assemble it I notice the endcap that was busted to pieces would not fit do to the inner light relector was cut 2.5 inches to long. So being a mechanical person that I am, This unit could not have been damaged in shipping but was actually broken when they assembled it and boxed it for shipping to me and the had to know to was broken before shipping. So since I had just sold my lighting set up and would now have a reef with no lights I had to bent and roll over the inner refector on the end to install it. I attempt to install the bulbs and due to there mismarking and installing of reflector I broke 2 pc bulbs. Now I am really upset!!!! So I just installed the hqi bulbs and run only those (this is now a friday night and I have no lights for my reef) I turn the lights and run them for approx 4 hours and 1 hqi bulb goes out.... I turn off the fixture for an hour to cool and turn it back on and it is working again. 4 hours later the same bulb goes out again. So I let it cool down and swap cords on the ballast and start the lights again( both are now working), $ hours later the opposite bulb goes out. Now I am fumed!!!! I call the company and comly explain the whole issue and had to demand a new fixture. They said it would be another 40 days... I told them I would mail there assembly back and I am expecting a FULL REFUND and they agreed. I had thrown away the huge box that it was shipped in (Can't keep boxes that size in a condowith little room). So I ordered a new fixture from LFS and recieved it in 7 days with no issues. So I box up the fixture for return using styro foam and send (at my expence $90.00) and

So I ordered a new fixture from LFS and recieved it in 7 days with no issues. So I check there website for return instruction and box up the fixture for return using styro foam newspapers for padding and send (at my expence $90.00) I DID NOT INSURE THE ITEM (DID NOT SAY ON THERE WEBSITE ITEMS MUST BE INSURED FOR RETURN ITEM NON FIXABLE ANYWAYS) Well they recieved the fixture and I get a call from them claiming it is all smashed up and the glass panels and bulbs are broken and they are reshipping back the assembly to me and not returning it. Well I called my Credit card company and demanded right after I shipped that they remove the item due to mismanufactured item and trouble with them resolving the issue (oh also I NEVER recieved a reciept from the credic card transaction or an invoice from them for the fixture from this company). As soon as I recieved there phone call today I called the credit card company and had new card issued to protect myself from being further harasses. I hope NO ONE HAS TO DEAL WITH THESES PEOPLE LIKE THIS....

PLEASE BEWARE!!!!!!
:mad2:

Wow.. I would be really upset myself. Did you get a full refund from your credit card company? I did not catch the last part.

My experience with Catalina Aquariums wasn't as horrid, but it wasn't good either. They sell T5 bulbs and when I tried to get information on the bulbs, it was like pulling teeth because their phone number wasn't listed on the website. Also, you couldn't order over the website, you had to FAX your order to them with your credit card number on the faxed sheet. When I got the bulbs in, the bulbs themselves came with ballasts and fixtures all in one unit. Luckily I got their phone number on the receipt...so after calling them, they told me that the bulbs that I ordered come in special throwaway ballast fixtures that last about 9 months. Well, I already had a good Triad ballast and retro endcaps set up, so I had no reason to use the fixtures. I called and complained and they sent me BULBS ONLY...Just like I ordered in the first place. Once I got the bulbs, I sent the fixtures back (at my expense - $30) and then noticed that the bulbs they weren't the standard 46" like the ATI bulbs..they were about 47 1/2" so they wouldnt fit in my endcaps unless I moved them (and still, I don't think they would have fit in my 48" canopy)....and if changed bulbs back to an ATI, now I would have to move my endcaps every time? I packed those bulbs up and sent them back for a net loss of $60 after they gave me a full refund.

I could have avoided all of this if they would have listed their phone number on the site and had someone competent answer the phone. But no, I lost $60 out of the deal and I will never ever deal with them again. Shop at Catalina Aquariums at your own risk.

My credit card company has issued me a refund and the outcome is pending... They are waiting for information from both side. I can not to believe that someone spending over 700 with a company thinks they can get away with sticking it to a customer...

Beware folks they will try to rip you blind!!!!

I had issues also. Keep in mind that they use many different web sites. There is likely just enough accounting to be "a different company."

So the best approach is to avoid anyone selling Catalina Aquarium products.

6x54 t5 setup. fixture was shipped in a box that was really two boxes barely held together by tape... probably fished out of the dumpster at McDonalds (Yes, there were actually McDonald's logos on the boxes). Found 4 of the 6 bulbs broken.

Tried to call them up but got horrible phone reception with both my cell phone and my home phone. The guy on the other end didn't even try to ask how he could fix it. I got a family member to call later, got replacement bulbs shipped at our expense, ran the fixture for two months, had to replace one of the ballasts, and then another. Yeah, also at our expense. Oh, the eBay listing said they were using workhorse ballasts. Nope.. if they're too cheap to actually pay for shipping replacement parts, what makes you think they'd spend a little more to get a decent ballast when it's so much easier to lie about it instead?

DO NOT PURCHASE FROM CATALINA AQUARIUM.

You only have 60days to do a charge back on your credit card and it sounds like they have drug it out beyond that. Man I hope you get some satisfaction.

I contacted my credit card company and was told I have 6 months.... Anyway they removed the charge and have sent it to arbitration. I am a business owner as well and all merchants argreements indicate several key things... Customer must have reciept and invioce and Mastercard protects its customers from fraud. If someone sells you something charges your card and you were not given a reciept or transaction slip the merchant will always loose the arbitration...

Be Kind to other reefers and SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

Catalina SUCKS!!!! DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THER PRODUCT OR THERE CUSTOMERS!!!

My 3 year old niece could have built a better fixture and made it work !!!!

Is this the same company that sells the 5-gal. jugs of Catalina Real Ocean Water?

They also sell their products under Aquauniverse.com
I purchased a T5 setup almost two years ago which advertised "Workhorse" brand ballasts. When I saw the quality of product I decided to go retro and maybe use some of the parts. I opened the fixture and found some cheap unknown brand ballasts. They also advertised an acrylic shield and legs for this system, which were not shipped. After many phone calls, they finally sent the legs (cheaply made) and PIECES of acrylic. I called back about the pieces for the shield and I was given some ridiculous explanation about how to slide the pieces in to fit the system. They claimed the internal reflector was "German" made, and it looked more like a piece of scrap from the backyard. The bulbs were also advertised as "German", and it turns out they were Catalina brand. Nothing really fit correctly. The acrylic was cheap and it subsequently warped and almost melted when I tried it out. I called them back and asked for a refund, which they refused! Again, this is after numerous phone calls. They use cheap components, faulty advertising and attract you with decent pricing, especially on Ebay. STAY AWAY!!!
