Catching a crab.

So I have this big whit hairy crab I'm trying to catch as he is killing all my snails. Ive tried the tilted glass trick and the bottle trap. Any other suggestions? I'm thinking I'm gonna have to take my rock out to get him. Would that be ok? I need him out ASAP!

how big is the rock? try not to disturb much if you take the rock out. in a perfect world you could catch him out in the open. tempt him out with food. also try looking for him at night since most are nocturnal and will come out to hunt.

He is very sneaky. Does not come off the rock and I have not seen his whole body out in the open. I search every night with a red light and can never see him. I really need some snails right now but I don't want to buy them if the crab is just gonna eat them.

Ok how do I make sure my cleaner shrimp doesn't eat it?

Feed him in advance.

Does the crab have multiple ways to get in and out of the rock? I would block all but one entrance, feed the tank mysis.. then put mysis in the bottle trap and shove it infront of which ever hole he is in. Sounds to me like a teddy bear crab.

I've tried this. My clownfish just swim right into the bottle trap. These are tank raised onyx picasso so they are not afraid lol. Right now I have a piece of fresh shrimp in a bottle trap. But my cleaner is in there.

Well atleast you know the clowns will be the easiest thing to catch :ape: If the rock is one you can just lift up, I would dip it in freshwater or brackish water and it should make a run for it... then if you have a fug I would save it and sell it to an lfs or somebody as teddy bear crabs are sometimes very wanted or keep for yourself.

What I did for my emeralds was I got the rock, picked it up, and lifted it until the crabs where bearly in the water, then I shaked it until the crabs decided to dive bomb the sand where they became easy to catch... then I got pinched

The rock he lives in is on the bottom lol. So I was wondering if it was ok to take the rock out of my tank during a water change. I think it's my last resort.

Yes the crab and most things will survive but the crab will lock in once out of the water and breaking him or the rock is most likely outcome

I don't want to break the rock. It's my best piece lol. How big will it get? I can't believe he has not fallen for any of the traps. It's such a smart and sneaky crab.

Find a container the rock can just lay on top of and lay there for awhile, fill it up with water from the tank, let the crab dangle from the rock into the bucket, eventionally he'll either run out of air and loose grip and fall, or he'll losen up and go to the water... or he be in your popcorn bowl while your watching a movie waiting for him to exit.

Well that's the last trap I'm setting. My cleaner shrimp was dead inside the trap with the raw shrimp when I woke up this morning. Guess ill have to take all the rock out to try and get him. At this point I will spear it if I have to.

Ok so I took all my rock out and found the crab stuck in a small hole, so I grabbed some tweezers to pull him out, he wouldn't let go so I ripped him Lim from lim lol. I really didn't want to kill it but I had no choice. Now my tank is all cloudy and my frogspawn does not look good. I'm all stressed out!
