Caulerpa Plants

I was told by a friend that yellow tangs and some other fish love a Caulerpa Bed. I seen a few pics of this plant and love it ,espically the Grape Culerpa type....However do you know if this is true and do you need any special lights or anything to keep them ? will they reproduce really quick ? thanx all feedback apprecitated ! hotkyprep1@aol.com

Clownfish--My tangs (Pacific and Hippo) won't touch calerpa, but many tangs like it. As you said, there are different types of calerpa and some varieties may be more appealing to them. IME it is easy to grow, Normal Output fluorescent lighting is sufficient.

I agree with Larry. I'ts very easy to grow. I have some in my refugium under one NO tube and it's doing well. My tangs didn't seem interested for a while either. But eventually my hippo took a bite and then the other two followed.

Once calupera takes hold, it will grow very quickly, but a tang will usually eat it up before it can really spread. I think it looks nice in the tank when it is pruned regularly, but it can sometimes grow too close to a coral and it will dig its roots into the coral's flesh. It is very disheartening. The kind of macroalgae I go fo instead is halimeda. It is a slower growing algae that is easily removed, and when it dies, leaves calcified remains of its body which can be ground up and made into substrate.
