If bright red, it sounds like cyano bacteria. If more brown, it is probably diatom. Either are okay if the tank is new and are part of the normal startup.
The causes of algae are usually nuitrient based. While it may not be nutrient based all the time i would say a good 90% are from nutrients such as phosphate and nitrate.
This tank was started Oct.1 2008. All parameters are perfect. I also am very religious and do tank maintenance every weekend with 10% water change and filters in sump get replaced washed and reused.

... then, the first checkpoints, are:
1) feeding, too much feeding puts too many nutrients in the tank
2) your light cycle.... if my lights are on more than 8 hours I get algae
3) make sure your tank has enough flow
i just had a bad case of it.what i did is a 25% water change, scooped up as much of the red slime up, put in a chemi pure elite pack, and used ultralife reef products red slime remover. so far so good on getting rid of it.
