Well I cant say that I am happy to post this, went to Elemers today just to look around at the small frag tanks that they have. Ended up buying 3 small zoa frags from there. Got home drip acclimated them and what did I find.

Found four zoa eating nudibrach's. I did call them after I found all of them. Dipped them in coral rx them fresh water dipped them. They are all opening back up nicely except for one. That was where mama nudibrach was hiding. I used a syringe and blasted tons of water at it, kinda no wonder why it hasn't opened yet.

So anyone who bought zoa frags from them recently I would recommend that you QT them for a few weeks

The same thing happened to me about a year ago. I bought a small frag of zoanthids (like 6 polyps) and it had 2 nudi's, aptasia, and brown fungus. I couldn't really tell under their old lighting because it was dimmer than my lighting. Not to mention that I've gotten flatworms from frags there too. They don't quarantine or examine their frags so it's best to dip anything you get. Not only from Elmers' but anywhere you get frags.

Also, be sure to examine for nudi eggs as well.

I did call Elmers and notify them that they had zoe eating nudibrach's in their system. I did not see any eggs but does not mean they are not there. I make it a practice to QT everything that I get from anybody for at least a month. I just hope no one one here bought any zoe frags and put them right into their system.

I plan on taking the larger nudibrach up to them in the morning as I work in Monroeville. I just hope the associate that I spoke to told the manager of the saltwater dept.

I would suggest using Coral RX on all of your new corals. You never know what you're going to get. I've used it for about a year now on all of my new corals before introducing them. It is amazing what it can kill off. It will also help with any algae on the new coral.

Well took the larger nudibrach to Elmers today. I showed one of the employees in the fish dept "it looks like a small anemone" I told him that it was a nudibrach he tried convincing me that it was not. Told him it was a zoe eating nudibrach, he then went and opened up one of the reef books and went to the nudibrachs and said "Oh yah I pulled one of those out of the tank last week".

Wish I would have known that before I bought my corals.

Not sure how you get an anemone out of that...but hey, whatever. :) Glad you found it before it caused any damage to your system.

I bought mushroom corals only last sunday and I didn't use revive or anything else or quarantine so my tank could be in trouble. Last time I used revive on the mushroom coral before putting it in my display the mushroom shrank to the size of a pea and disappeared 1 day later so I thought revive must be bad for mushroom corals

Usually revive works well with mushroom corals to get all the parasites off the rock that it's on (Flatworms, Etc.) I have never had a problem with revive on mushroom corals or any other corals. The solution does smell strong so using too much will definitely hurt the corals. I have noticed using too much can hurt corals, and if they are in there too long as well.

Hi all,

Please keep this discussion civil.

ANY and ALL animals that are purchased ANYWHERE can potentially carry diseases, predators, parasites, etc. EVERY animal you purchase should be quarantined. If you introduce a harmful organism to your tank because you didn't quarantine, it is YOUR FAULT, not the store where you bought it.

No retailer has the time to scrutinize every coral and other animal that comes through their systems for hitch hikers, and not every fish store employee should be expected to be an expert in every aspect of aquarium keeping.

Elmer's has been very kind to the club and I don't want to see them alienated. If you calmly and politely inform them of a problem and provide references, I am sure they will be receptive. If you act irrationally, make accusations and can't show evidence of what you are claiming, then you should not be taken seriously. I don't say this as an indictment of the individual Rostr02, but rather some common sense advice for anyone in a similar situation.

I support elmers. Like u stated adam retailers just don't have time to make sure everything is good to go with livestock. That is why qt is important in this hobby. I know i learned the hard way haha

I still support Elmer's as well, there is a reason why I did not post names. Not everyone in the hobby does QT every new coral/fish that they get. I know that Elmers does not QT anything that they receive. In no way did I want to make it seem like it was Elmers fault, if it came off that way well than I am sorry. I just wanted everyone to know to treat the corals that they recently purchased if they did not QT them.

I must say I was upset when I went to the store and was told they knew there was a problem. But still sold me corals without informing me of said problem. But, to be honest I would have got them any way. I do coral rx and qt all new additions.

On another note, how do we recommend products to Elmers. Wish they would have had some coral rx in the store, I do believe it would sell well I use it all the time.

Adam, and everyone else, this is the most important part of this thread. The fact that they knew they had a problem, and sold the product anyway, puts the responsbility COMPLETELY on them. If they had informed the buyer before they sold it, it would be up to the buyer to either not purchase the product, or buy at their own risk.

Have to remember too that most the ppl that work there know little to nothing about saltwater fish/corals. They just bag up whatever u want. Hopefully they are trying to remedy the problem after you informed them. If not then i can see a slight problem

There are 2 posts here that say they know they do not quarentine 'anything' Can you back that statement up? If not, I suggest not posting such bold statements.

Also I've been in a lot of LFS in my life when they were unloading their corals. Their objective is to get it into the tank as quick as possible, it's already been in the bag for about 12 hours or more.

This was a civil thread from local Pittsburgh reefers (until you posted), and we have all been to and know people at Elmers, which has been around for a long time. I don't think it was necessary to interject your "suggestion." We all place by the rules here in Pittsburgh... Big Brother.
