Cavitation

Just got done setting up a mag5 closed loop on my son's 29. The pump sounds like its missing a cylender, so I'm guessing cavitation. Is opening up the intake flow the only way around this? Are there any other test I can do before I redo the whole intake system?

If the intake is restricted then this can be the problem.does it run normally just in a pail of water

yeah, sounds normal with nothing attached to it. Going to try with allowing more flow in first to see how it does.

The intake cannot be undersized.if the inlet is 3/4 inch,all plumbing needs to 3/4 or larger on the intake side

The inlet and outlet is 1/2" on the pump so that is what all the plumbing is. I made the the part of plumbing that goes into the water 1/3 the length (so it doesn't go down into the water as far) it was before and that has made a big difference in the noise. Now I just get a sputter noise every once in awhile. I might pickup a 1/2 to 3/4 piece and make the inlet pipe 3/4 for the most part and see if that fixes the rest of the noise.
