Center overflow questions

Has anyone had good luck with a center overflow? I have a 180G reef right now 2 years old built in. 3 viewable sides. Drilled and plumbed. Very happy with my set up!!!! But, I scratched the glass with a magnet cleaner:mad: . It is not real bad, but it defenately bothers me. I was thinking of replacing the tank with an acrilic. With a center overflow and putting it through the wall into our bedroom. 4 Viewable sides. Pretty complicated I understand. But has anyone had good luck with this type of set up?

PS: My beautiful reef has been built from the help and info from these forums . Thanks!

I have a 300 with a center overflow in the back wall. The tank is acrylic and I like it.I have just set it up so it hasn't been running for very long.If I had the room to view it from all sides I would have loved to have it in the center. An acrylic tank is easy to drill. If you do a close loop you can aim the flow towards the center of the tank and it will end up in the overflow.I have an 8 way on my system and I have the flow shooting slightly upwards so the detritus can get lifted up into the water column and over into my overflow. My return lines are also hidden in the overflow.

If you can go 8' I would put 2 overflowes in the middle and live rock around the columns. one of them could be just for tunze power heads. Just an idea that I have been playing with.

I saw an 8ft x 4 ftx2 ft at my lfs with 2 center overflows witch was a very nice looking tank. The tank was glass and he had a nice sump underneath the metal stand.

I am not sure about the glass V acrilic thing. But you can polish acrilic. I dont like powerheads, I have an OM 4way that I love.

The way my tank is set up, I can run the return lines up in the hood. It worked out very well. I plan to use the same set up. The new tank would be about 40" deep 60" long and 28" high.

I would do the return lines like I did. This is my return lines 3/4" with 2 x 1 1/2" drains

Steve The Plumber, I love your tank, It is an Identical layout to my existing tank. I am talking about having the overflow in the center of the tank, not along a wall.
maoiwowie, that is what I hm talking about. Do you like the layout?

The lay out is fine, but there are things i would do differently for my particular tank. You need to keep in mind that you dont want chords on any sides of the tank; so i built a dry-chamber that extends through the exact center of the tank to run any plugs or tubing through. The overflows are on each side of the dry chamber. Also, since its an acrylic tank you need some sort of bracing and this made it difficult for me to clean around the center area where there was just a hole to reach in...and cleaning 4 sides takes hours literally. I love the fact that it was 4 sided viewable. It didnt give that cave look in typical in-wall set-ups. Peering through the tank through the opposite pane gave the tank the illusion of a lot of depth. I took this tank down when i moved to a smaller place. Would i set it up like this again? Yes, however i would go smaller. Just easier to manage and less scraping. Currently setting up a 4 sided viewable rimless 48x48x25, but in starphire.
