ceramic cylinders

are the ceramic cylinders in the aquaclears beneficial at all? would they soon become live and work like live rock over time if you ran them in a canister?

They are "bio filtration" media-- another version of the ubiquitous "bio balls."

They aren't needed if you have live rock in your tank, and can acutally cause nitrate issues over time. If you are running a fish only tank you can leave them in, but it's best to remove them if you are keeping corals.
