Ceramic reef rock

So being an art teacher with my own kiln... i was wonderingif i co ld make reef rock. Has anyone tried this? Will tthe fired clay leach anything into the water ?

I think eventually someone will more experience making their own rock will say it but to find out what would leach out you'd have to make a sample, stick it in some saltwater and test the water.

There are ceramic parts in tank things (vortech pumps for example) though so it may not matter.

But at the end of the day you really have nothing to lose and if it works out you may have the next big thing.

I've also got a kiln and likewise plan to try making rock work. I expect a little bit of a challenge as the pieces will be thicker than typical pottery ware...

A large percentage of the frag plugs and frag disks out there are fired ceramic - made either by pressing clay into a mold or slip casting. There are also bio-filter blocks being sold that are porous ceramic not unlike high temperature fire brick. Given all this, I suspect that concerns regarding leaching are unfounded.
