chaeto smells worse than a corpse

So I started using chaeto a few weeks ago.. It grew super fast in my fuge, so I went to trim about half of it off and WOAH.. once I put it in a bucket and smelled it.. let's just say a dead body would smell like roses compared to this. Thought it was odd. A few days later I took a little bit of new growth and put it in a veggie clip in my main tank to see if the tangs would eat it... no chance. I took that small bit out yesterday and couldn't resist smelling it.. again smells horrible, like rotten eggs, but worse. What is this phenomenon?

There may be detritus trapped in it breaking down and releasing sulfur compounds. That would explain the egg smell.

I assume the same, especially with the clump of it that's in my fuge.. however the very small amount I put on the veggie clip looked clean, but still stunk like crazy.

I would try to increase flow on the chaeto to prevent small particles from building up in it.

I agree. I now have my carbon reactor discharging on top of the chaeto
