Chaeto

you wouldn't happen to be coming over towards PA at all would you ? If so I live in Erie and would love some. Let me know if your job takes you towards pa. Thanks !!!!

I have some in South Euclid in case you ever happen down this way. I've got a fairly tiny sump with little room for a real fuge (with my current insump skimmer taking up most of the space) so I've been keeping it in a breeder's net down there to keep it from clogging pumps. But as a result, I've got a ton of extra floating around in my QT tank with no place to go.

Do you just put that in a sump and let it be. Does it need an intense light on it? I would like some but don't know much about it...

It can grow with nearly any light, even crappy incandescents, the 6500K range flourescents are popular for this use, and Home Depot sells a Lights of America fixture that seems popular for fuge lighting (though you have to do some wiring): cheap and small enough to not have to light your whole cabinet or heat it up too much (though they do add some heat unfortunately).

I just have a cheap 6000K strip flourescent, but it doesn't fit too well over my sump, and is too long (I'm already growing some crap brown algae in the sump where I don't want it). Hoping to go the LoA route soon when I can afford it.

You wouldn't necessarily want to put it right in the sump depending on how you have it set up. Myself, I have a lot of pumps down in there and the stuff tends to free float a lot of little strands which can clog things up. That's why I keep it in a breeders net. Most people with a real fuge have no such problems of course.

Like any macro, it feeds on nitrates, and this species in particular seems to grow like crazy (I seem to have to take out a softball of the stuff every week even out of my tiny setup). It also has less downsides than most macros.

Maybe folks who need some should just post their need. I just harvested and composted a bunch the size of a volley ball. I'm sure there are others, like myself, who harvest and discard, but would be otherwise quite happy to share.

Ya I would like to give it a try, would appreciate getting some from you. Hope I can make the next meeting...

I dont have a fuge or sump so I have a ball of chaeto in my main display wedged between some rocks. My question is is it normal for pieces of it to break off?

Yep, especially when first torn out of some larger ball, there will be tiny bits wrapped up in your wad, and these will float out over time and get tangled up in just about everything in your DT (under LR, against filters, etc. But eventually, all the remaining strands will grow out and not be such a danger of floating off.... until you prune again, and so on.

If you want to keep it in the DT, I've found that those super cheap plastic frame breeders nets work okay for keeping most of it contained (though they tend to be on the small side, and sometimes the net is too big and bits can stick out: nothing's perfect I guess). You can also get more complex in-tank hangon fuges for keeping macro separate from your main system, though the real problem there is getting enough flow on it without blowing it all around the tank: it grows best with lots and lots of flow (preferably making it tumble). Obviously a fuge or sump, even a super cheap DIY one, would be better for keeping this from getting all over the DT. Of course, chaeto is better than most in this regard...
