Chaetodon octofasciatus

Is it me, or do I only see seven stripes on each? Unless you count the margin on the posterior fins? :)

You should ask for a 1/8 refund!!!!

#8... ;)

 I'll wait and see when they get here if Liveaquaria threw in that extra stripe, but their a pretty reputable company so I'm sure they wouldn't try to sell a mislabled C. septafasciatus

LA is calling the BF 8 lined so you guys are groping to find 8 stripes or lines. The common name widely used is 8 banded. There are 8 bands on the fish.

Of course, it's just semantics & no one really cares, more important is if the fish have any chance of living.

Except, the fish's base color is yellow, so therefore the yellow is not the "band" but rather the background coloration. There are 7 black bands or stripes, whichever you prefer, on each side. There is additionally one black band on the forehead and one on the trailing edge of the caudal, anal and dorsal fins. Split those up between sides and you have 8 per. :)

Lets be clear. Common names are ridiculous. Saying you have a better common name is like being the tallest midget. It gets you nowhere. Fast. My earlier comment was in jest, more than anything. But, sadly, our hobby relies on common names.

 Well that's creative!
:D

I don't really care too much how it got the name. I just like playing things along.

More importantly, there is an adapted pair in captivity. A good basis to start understanding the dietary needs of this species.

Well, they got here in one piece! (two pieces, actually :) )

They're nice and fat, that's a very good sign. They're both pretty timid, however, sticking close to the rocks, even though they're the only fish in the tank. I feel like I should be providing coral cover for them, but there's only so much you can do with a QT ! Hopefully they warm up to their surroundings.

I'll have to upload some pictures!

cantonese,congrats on the octos!

Some suggestions if i may, hopefully you have water changes ready to go.Changing 50% every other day is not out of the question.

And have you gone to the Asian Seafood Market, and gotten clams, scallops, squid, and any other seameats avalabile.Rinse with clean water, put into a blender and puree, then freeze this.

Then using a grater, run the frozen block of seameats over the grater several times held over RO/DI water.Use a eyedropper to suck up a small amount, and introduce to the Bflys, along with the frozen mysis.Observe closely to see if they begin to accept the shaved seameats, along with the mysis/brine.

Regardless, feed 3 to 6 times daily.Small feedings/frequentley offered is the way to success with B,flys.

These beautys will require your utmost attention!Everyday, you will need to observe, monitor their water, and feed wisely.

Best of luck.

Congrats on a beautiful pair Chris!

Get some pictures posted NOW! ;)

Good luck with the new additions, I am sure you will treat them as the special little fish they are. :)

I didn't say I have a better name for the fish............I said counting strips on the nose of the fish or saying the nose line & back fin edge equal one stripe is ridiculous, when there are clearly eight bands on the fish & probably where the "eight band/stripe/line" moniker comes from.

I could care less what common name is used & this was all just in fun anyways soooo........to something more important.......

Chris,
Are they eating yet or showing any signs or interest in food? Picking at the rock?

Hey guys sorry I've been kind of busy, but I did manage to take some photos!

They've started picking at some of the foods offered and become enthusiastic when I add mysis, hopefully they'll start eating eating more as they get more and more comfortable with their surroundings.

Thanks for the advice discusone! Believe it or not I don't have a blender :eek2: That will be next on my list!
