Chaetodontoplus caeruleopunctatus

Hello,

I purchased a Chaetodontoplus caeruleopunctatus (blue spotted angelfish) from you. Beautiful fish, looks very healthy save a mark on its left side. I have order often from you in the past and this is the first time that I have received a fish that will not eat for me. Could you tell me what you were feeding this fish prior to shipment? I currently feed mysis, brine, squid, krill, mussels, and algae to the tank daily (all soaked in selco). I also tried some pellets but it would not eat those either. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Dflad,

Thank you for contacting us with your questions. We were feeding your Angelfish Hikari Spirulina and Brine shrimp soaked in Garlic and Selcon. It is quite common when a specimen is shipped they will stop eating as they adjust to their new surroundings. The best thing to do is to continue to offer different foods and the fish will eat when he is hungry.

Please contact us if you have any further questions on your amazing new addition.

Any other notes from the facility on what they were feeding this awesome fish. I have continued to try to feed him but he refuses everything.

dflad,

You may want to try withholding feedings from the fish for a couple of days and then introducing the food again to entice the fish to eat when food is offered to the tank. Sometimes the fish will not feed during feeding times if they are aware that the food is always available. We recommend that you continue to offer your Angelfish the Hikari Spirulina and Brine shrimp soaked in Garlic and Selcon.

If you have further questions please contact us.

How many other fish are in the tank? Bluespots can be shy and intimitated by other fish and refuse to eat. Also try Spectrum pellets. My pair of bluespots go nuts over it.

Maybe 5, but all are aggressive eaters. I have thought of moving it to another tank for the time being, but would prefer to not stress it anymore. The fish seems very interested in food and has picked at some of the clams I have fed as well as a bit of algae.

Do you keep your bluespots with any coral? I have an open tank that I keep tons of soft coral in with no fish, I was thinking of moving it over there, but afraid it would eat the soft corals.

I will try the spectrum pellets. i have tried Dainichi marine pellets, all my other fish love it. I feed it in my reef and my regal and majestic devour them.

Well, it has been 14days, he still has not eaten. I have tried almost everything. Not sure that this guy will make it much longer. I separated him into a peacful tank and he hides now, but shows no interest in food at all.

For future consideration, it is a very bad idea to introduce a new fish in with a bunch of "sharks". I, too, have a tank full of very aggressive eaters, and I quanartine all my new adds, not as much for disease concerns, as much as it is to ensure they are eating. Pound them with food, give them more they could ever want. Once they are eating strongly without competition, they are far more suitable for the display. Just tossing therm in after 2 days of transport, and expecting them to compete easily is expecting a it much.

A suggestion. Add food, and go away. My new fish are very reluctant to eat IN FRONT OF ME. I will even watch from a distance with binoculars (I know, Im a nerd), and see them picking. When I get up close, they hide.

Also, FWIW, my scribbled will eats zoas, but doesnt bother anything else.

I have never had an angel or a fish have this problem when adding it to a tank. Of course, I have never kept a Chaetodontoplus before. When I say aggressive eaters I dont mean aggresive fish. All my fish eat aggressively including my majestic and regal. That being said I have since moved the fish to a tank all by itself and it still refuses to eat. The tank is shielded from view as well so that there is little foot traffic and little interaction with me at feeding time. The fish is almost skin and bones, I am going to try some live foods for stimulation as well as some arctipods, but I have very little hope that the fish will eat. The wound that it came in with has since grown as well which is disheartening.

In the past I have had excellent luck with fish from LA. Because of their QT process I do not find it necessary to further stress the shipped animal with more QT. My rate of mortality is much higher when I do secondary QT after shipping. Therefore, putting it into an established tank works really quite well since LA has already spent 14 days treating the animal.
