Chaetomorpha

I want to add some chaeto to my main display because I dont have a sump/refugium. I tried getting in some from my LFS' but they both dont have it in and one of them dont even know what chaeto is, only caulerpa.

Is chaeto a short name for the real name of it? What exactly is chaeto. I know everyone here has/ or talks about it.

thanks

I would never add Chaetomorpha to a display. It will end up clogging your pumps and cause nothing but headaches.

I agree, if you can put it in something that will contain it, it would be much better.

Thanks a lot for that link aquaman- really appreciate it. I just started a very long thread about the algae problems I was experiencing. Very long story short, I dont think I will end up a getting a fuge, though I am fully aware of how important it is to a successful reef aquarium. I was surfing the threads on reefcentral and found this thread and this guy used chaeto in his main display. Here's the link to his thread...

Hey mapplebaum37, I will give you a softball size. Mine grows FAST in my tank. If anyone can tell me the best way to ship it, I have never done that before.

Your tangs will go through a ball of chaeto in no time if its in your display.

This is quite true..I tried to put a ball in my display tank and the tangs totally demolished the ball.

erondon- I will try to get some off liveaquaria first and if that doesnt work out so well, shipping some of your chaeto sounds awesome. Thanks a lot for the offer...

Buckyes: Do you think that if I put the chaeto in a container towards the surface of the water (almost skimming surface) like the guy in the link has (scuba steve) the tang I have (yellow) will be able to get to it? Also, If I have a lot of nutrients in the tank hense the algae I was experiencing, although it has gotten much better, maybe the chaeto will grow too fast for the tang to consume? or is that just not possible? Maybe I can net the chaeto so the tang cant reach in and pick at it? I'm pretty eager to add some to the display bec. I think it will really help out the tank a lot with the left over phosphates/ nitrates I have.

This is a rough example of before and after of the rocks in the tank...

Just given you guys an idea of how things looked and look...

thanks

I love having chaeto in my main display. It helps kill off the Dictyota algae, my Tomini Tang does not touch it.

I kind of like the look of it too. If I had a sump I would put it in there...

Do you let it grow on your rocks logzor, or just net it up in the corner of the tank and isolate it from the aquascape of the tank? Have any pics?

thanks for sharing!

Here is a tank shot from a little over a week ago. The chaeto does not attach to the rocks, it just gets dense, then I harvest and put it in other areas.

So far I think having it in tank has been really effective at getting phosphates and nitrates before the Dictyota.

I have clustered my sps frags around it and the Dictyota turns white and dies off.

My situation is a bit different because I have a Dictyota problem.

The algae on the back glass is gone now. My aquasun turned red for some reason and caused that to bloom, reefgeek replaced it for free!

My tank is just over 6 months old and everything is stabilizing nicely, I am currently having a huge coraline algae bloom and much of the Dictyota is turning white and dying off.

ahh...of course...Now I remember, you posted a pic of the tank a couple days ago and I commented on what a beautiful tomini tang you have! Yea, I dont think I'll farm mine on my aquascape for the moment being, but isolate it in a corner for the time being, once I get my hands on some of it. I really think this can make a world of wonders occur if added to my tank and thats why I'm so eager to get some chaeto!!!

:) bed time....thanks for sharing logzor and helpful info others...

All the websites I search to order livestock at are currently out of chaeto... What website do you use?

Ive checked liveaquaria and marinedepot, so count those out

i modified a couple of aqua clear 70's and turned them into a small fuge i took out the media basket and broke off the bottom piece and used that for the screen so that none of it flowed back into the tank and then i put liverock rubble in the bottom and a ball of cheato on top. you could put two of them on your tank and i think that would grow it fast enough to be effective. IMO

Also, how does chaeto promote pod growth in the tank?

It gives them a place to hide so they can breed more easily.
