Chainlink Eel Questions

Hey guys my supplier has a chainlink eel and im pretty much going to feed it live food, i know, no fresh water feeders. Do they eat fish or they crustacean eaters only? I would feed chromis or some damsels if it does eat fish, and if crustaceans i would feed it crabs, and enriched ghost shrimps.

Also you guys have pics of your chainlinks? Would definatly like to see them as im going to see mine tomorrow and make a decision then with what i would wanna do...

They are very similar in behavior and eating habits to the Snowflake and Zebra Moray eels. They primarily eat crustaceans, but are opportunistic eaters of fish.

Why feed it live food only? You should be able to wean it onto frozen food. Didn't take mine long to learn that what was on the feeding stick was good.

I had a chainlink for a week before it went carpet surfing. It was a very active feeder. I fed it shrimp and krill from a feeding stick. They can get rather large also.

Its a cool eel to have but you do need a big tank and soft gravil.

I have a yellow head eel and he only eat live fish. well it was fun and all but he starts to pick on the tankmates so i started to give him frosen shrimp. he didnt eat for 1 week but he started eating. after 4 week i put some feeder fish he didnt go after it. So now i have a clown fish in the thank and he will not go after it but i know if i dodnt feed him for 1 week my clown will be gone.

I would change him over to frozen foods as fast as i possibly could. in my opinion it is just a lot safer and cheaper to feed frozen food than live...

I agree makes no sense to feed live food if you dont have to. What is your reason for wanting to feed live food?

i just want to see it pick off fish and how it would do it in the wild, i could do ghost shrimp primarily cause it'll be going in with a radiata or antenata lion...eels coming first though, hes already on mysis and other foods so hes already on frozen...just wanted to see what the people here were saying on the issues of live/frozen...im sure enough people do both...just wanted some reactions.....how about any eel pics? you guys got any?

i would keep him on frozen and put live in only on occasion. live fiddler crabs with the claws taken off would be a show for you.

This type of Eel doesn't typically eat fish in the wild, they primarily eat crustaceans.

thats what i had read but it had also said that it would eat fish, i guess we'll see what he/she does....i'll try some cheap fish like chromis in the tank with it because i wont get the lion for another month or so, so im gonna try some other things and see how it affects the tank...thanks for all the replies people!

well friday night when the eel had come in he had jumped...he unfortuantly didnt make it after the jump and died i guess either yesterday or today. So i'm looking at getting something else i might get Gymnothorax fimbriatus the yellow headed moray now for a little bit of change. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Sorry to here that. My Cahinlink did the same thing. He went carpet surfing a few times. The yellow head eel can be very aggressive. I would only keep it with fish that are way to large for it to fit in its mouth.
