Chalice care thread

Hey guys. My large chalice started to bleach and die off all around lots of the edges. Not really sure what could be going on. 60 gallon tank. Calc 430, dKh 9, temp 79, Sal 1.024

Kessil 360's. Do you think it might be too bright on them right now? All other LPS are growing like mad. Also half of my chalice is still growing excellent but the other half is the part that seems like it's dying.

Has anybody successfully brought back a chalice from a severe bleaching incident?

Yes. I had my 46 gallon sumpless system which i neglected because I was moving everything to my frag setup I have up now. I forgot that the chalice existed and it got buried behind the rockwork.I found it when I was tearing down the tank and I saw some slight coloration and white flesh in the middle of the chalice. It was 3/4 dead with only two eyes. I put it under my eggcrate and cut the dead parts with the bandsaw. Its almost fully returned and is starting to round out. It took like 6 months to come back.

I run a 6 bulb t5 fixture. ATIs blue (4) and (2) coral plus. I also have reefbrites royal blue over the tank (2).

My chalice has been developing some small dead spots in the centre. I haven't witnessed any fish picking on it or debris settling on it. There is no bleaching and it is growing a lot on all the edges. Any idea on how to stop this?

My magnesium is 1380, calcium 400 and KH is 9. I run Radion lights with T5 supplementing. The chalice has never been spot fed and been in captivity for about 5 years. It is about 18 inches long and 12 inches wide.

It happens sometimes if it keeps getting larger you might have to frag out the dead peice. But save that as a last resort.

Quick question to OP or anyone else who can explain. What is the rationale behind waiting a year before adding chalices? Asuuming your water chemistry is correct and stable, you provide adequate lighting and proper flow, what about the tank maturity makes it necessary?

Holy old member with low posts batman!!!! My take on this is lack of maturity in the bacterial microfauna leading to swings in nutrients etc. Some folks can keep a system steady right away and grow any coral and there's those of us that need to wait awhile as things balance out by themselves.

You got me.. I'm a taker and not a giver! I have not had enough success in reefing to offer much advice to a broad community. Your explanation makes sense although that argument is probably pretty sound for nearly everything we add to our tank so I struggle with what is appropriate to add in the early stages. Thanks

I'm a a big proponent of not adding any sensitive coral until at least 6 months unless you used live rock from another system.
