okay so i bought a new original mummy eye chalice from diablo corals. and i was wondering where i should place it in my tank. from what i've heard they like to be in shade? but what exactly does that mean? i guess i could put it under the shadow of my frag rack but would it get enough light?

i actually decided to place it on my frag rack like to the far side of the tank where it gets a little less than the other corals on the rack. i hope it'll be good where it is. i just don't really have anywhere to put it on the sand bed

+1 from Grant.

My chalices are either on the sand bed or on rock 3 inches above the sand bed. LEDs are strong so watch out. Noticed the kessil in your signature. Spot feeding chalices is entertaining if you have time. I either use tweezers or a turkey baster to place mysis on the eyes. Lastly if you see that the chalice is receding or shrinking thus showing the skelton, then you might have issues with your parameters.

okay, I will watch it, and when is the best time to spot feed do feeders come at when the lights are out or just whenever? Also i will watch for receding tissue

My 2 chalices are within inches of the sand as well. they put out feeders after lights out. They are long sweepers too about 1 1/2 inches so be careful is something I'd right next to it.

Tim, The feeders will usually come out at night, but you can encourage them to feed by shutting off the flow, wafting a bit of food over the coral and waiting for a few minutes for the feeders to extend then give it a good feeding. Its best to do after lights out so most of the fish are asleep and dont steal the food.

The feeder length is important when placing your chalices. Learned the hard way when I started and my sps was stung by those tentacles. There are very cool whe you see them the first time.

yeah my chalice is pretty much all alone on the corner of my frag rack, lol. i tried to put it pretty far away from the light so it didn't get too much.

my chalice seemed to have very small feeder tentacles, maybe just because it is small, i only have a frag with 2 eyes so that could be it, i think it did manage to grab onto at least 1-2 mysis though, and i succesfully fed my acan and bubble corals. :)

Low lights, medium flow area are best. A couple of inches from the sand or on the upper edge of the tank away from the light is good.

i actually built a smaller frag rack and stuck it in the corner of my tank just for my chalices. I think they're in a really good spot now. I also got a new jason fox robokaki chalice, and a nice frag of hollywood stunner. :) try and get some pics up.

They call it hollywood stunner for a reason ;) those will have very long sweeper and will sting anything in it's path so keep it isolated.

The rack is nice but when the chalices start taking off they will need space to get a nice circular growth, that's when you want to move them to the bottom of the tank and give them space to grow. They will grow faster that way.
