Chalice!

Reef Bass

colors and textures
I won a chalice at the raffle a couple months ago which, no offense Jake, wasn't showing much in the way of splendor. In fact it reacted rather negatively to my standard acclimation procedure to my 400w halides of putting new arrivals on the bottom for the first few weeks. While it looked pretty cool from a gnarly perspective with skeletal "fins" protruding, to me it seemed like pretty much the opposite of thriving.

I moved it from full sun on the bottom to partial shade and it responded very positively very quickly. Within a week it was fleshing out or growing over the exposed skeleton. It has grown noticeably and begun to color up. Even better, there are easily in excess of new 10 mouths apparent. You can see a few of them here just from this one side shot. Maybe I'll take a top view tomorrow but it's impossible with my dSLR and tough to do with my point and shoot. I'd probably be better tipping it on its side and shooting through the glass. Anyway, here it is:

It's easily 50% thicker and 30% larger in diameter than when I won it, which was veritably chubby compared to its size when receded before shading. You can see how it has expanded down around the rock on which it is mounted. And with these colors emerging it's off the "drab and dull" list.

While I've been an sps guy, I am officially very stoked about this piece and much more appreciate of chalices and lps in general. :D
