Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think the melting pot chalice is different since the base colour exhibits the color change instead of the individual mouths and growth edge. Just something different! Two watermelon chalice frags sold for +$300 each also this week on eBay but no one seems shocked at all about that. Is it because we are used to paying lots since it's a watermelon? Or is it due to the fact that it truly is a nice looking coral? I'm sure the stamp collecting mentality plays a role, but I'd like to hope the person that won the auction wanted it because they thought it was a gorgeous piece. Don't get me wrong, I will, and have, spent big cash on a frag but it's because I think it's gorgeous not because someone tells me it's a Tyree (no offense to Tyree lineage). Im sure the melting pot chalice will become a sought out coral, same as the miami hurrican /pumpkin patch chalice is, but it likely had humble beginnings. Someone likely got lucky and picked it up at a LFS/Wholesallers one day and put the coral in their tank, which ended up gorgeous! That is one of the reasons I always keep close to my LFS, the opportunity to get something that no one has ever seen before, and to see what it does in an aquarium environment.

I got this one for free from a friend (evening lighting 2 x HOT5 aquablue special's):

Congrats ktar on the auction! I wish I lived down there so I could get involved in more frag trades!

Fussoverthis, that is a gorgeous coulour. i love the golden eyes with the blue base!

I have something similar, just more gold, less blue. How far from your lights is it? Mine is ~12" from 6 x HOT5's on an IC660: Mine may be developing more yellow due to high lighting? but who knows since they aren't from the same mother colony.

The melting pot is going for 630 a frag on ebay! It was nice, but more than a hurricane or watermelon?

one born every minute:p

i thought it was beguiling for the listing to only have the actinic shot. i don't think it would've broke $200 if the full-light shot was there. it's second rate to the hurricane or watermelon, but like scythanith said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Nice chalice ... I only have Tyree LE red watermelon and golden eye chalices. Watermelon is tiny smaller than a dime. With high light it seems to have pink color like the original.

Is there a photo somewhere of the Miami Hurricane? I'd like to see what it looks like!

2 pages back there are a few pictures.

For the life of me I can't figure out what that big bubbly coral in the middle is? Any info All D?

Thanks for the replies.
The coral to the back left is the Setosa monti.

got any pics of it? thats one of the bigger ones i've yet to see.

Al G -

It morphed like crazy when I changed to 150 watt 20k radium de bulb. It was the one going around as an "acan maxima". I got it from Eric @ FF. This is what it looked like before the bulb change.

Yes here is a better pic of the setosa. I have fragged it twice. It seems to be a fast grower for me. :)
