Got this big blue a few days ago. will be interesting to see how it colors up/down.

yep, from Tulsa but been here for about 3 years. I went to the newer fish store on 61st & Sheridan when we were there for Thanksgiving- seemed alright. that corals & reefs was nice but looks like when they moved it wasnt as nice (?) next time Im up there Ill let ya know if you want to trade anything or just give me the lowdown on the shops

How are the frags doing? I like to make big (about twice that size) frags of my echinos to ensure survival, I also try to get one mouth per frag (or more). They are super slimy too!

All of the frags are doing good, I would have liked to have made only 3 frags (ended up with 5) and for them to be larger. Once I started fragging, I found I couldn't control where it was breaking. The skeleton is really thick, but each frag has atleast one mouth on it.

I've had success double-fragging the Echinophyllia's. I take large frags from the colony, give them time to heal over, and then cut the frags in half once more. I find breaking up small frags off the colony difficult. But whacking off a few inches from one edge.. that's easier. Then just whack that piece in sections, after it's had a chance to heal over.

rob(jusreefin) here's the mother colony picture taken with a flash so the color is kinda washed out...you can get an idea of how amazingly blue this piece is though. the frag i gave to you came directly from this one.

I've also found this way to be the best way to frag Echinophyllia. It's the least stressful way for the coral.

There are times I try to make a few off the mother, and I end up with more frags, and smaller frags than I'd hoped for. Those small frags will do fine. I even keep the tiny chunks, and they heal over.

Also, If you break off a large echino frag and the skeleton breaks in a place you don't want it to break, as long as the flesh is still attached you can leave it alone. After a few weeks the skeleton will bind again. Like Reefermac said, I like to make one large frag and let that cut heal. If that large frag had breaks in the skeleton, I let that heal up too. Once it's healed over the break edge, I'll cut it in half. That way there is only one edge at a time that has to heal.

Its been awhile heres my new piece, I call it the DRZL pinkeye home from school
The piece is about 8 inches long by 5 1/2 wide. Labeled as encrusting monti at the LFS, Oh YAaaa!
I was close to getting a very similar piece smaller size online for $250, got this steal for $70. Whadya think?

I hope they do read it. IMO they should not be in the business if they can't tell the difference between those 2 corals. But hey I guess that's how us hobbiest score sometimes

Well, it's easy to tell that it's not a monti, but I'm confused with most of the Challices. When they're fragged, they all look very similar. How do you tell? That can be an Echinopora as well for all I know.
