I think PBs are same as Vivid Echinos and from what I've seen, they lack the green rim like other watermelons? I could be wrong...

Well, without seeing them side by side in the same tank, I wouldn't claim anything 100%, BUT, I did see a large chunk (not just a flat frag) of the "Vivid Echino" at RAP and it looked exactly like PB. I mean, exactly...same bumpy coralites with green/orange eyes. And Kenny's flat Vivid frag with more orange eyes is growing/looking like the flat leading growth edge of my PB.

So I'm 99% sure it's the same coral. I was told it's not proper form to just call it "Vivid Echino" though, since it didn't come from that colony, so we named it something else. This is correct to do, yes?

BTW, I'm not sure why Vivid's pics on their site of the coral look different than what it looks like in person

Absolutely Peter, your piece deserves it's own name. My comment was more in reference to the fact that PB/VEs lack the green rim (Do they?) but I was never sure, only seeing them in pics.

Plus, I like your name more. Pink Boobies ftw.

Yes, you are correct...the growth edge has no green or any other contrasting color.

Here's one I picked up yesterday. While the green and red I'll admit is a bit tired , it simply GLOWS, so I couldn't resist. It's a "chalice", isn't it?

Here is my new one I found at a lfs for 60 clams. It just went into the tank when i took the pics. When it blobbed out the rim is about 3/4" blue. Any ideas about what it's named?

This is the whole thing, it goes over the back rock about 3" the powerhead in the back is a tunze nano.

A quick question: do these more vivid and spectacular colored chalices need more light than the "standard" species? Do you have to keep them higher in the tank? Seems like a lot of these pics show them in the sandbed, but looking for some insight.

No, most of them prefer low lighting, which make them a great piece for the collection.

Hmm, not trying to start an arguement but that hasn't been my experience with chalices. Some develop/retain their best coloration under what I consider fairly strong light ie 400 W 20,000 radiums in 6-12" of water. I wouldn't say most prefer low light in captivity anyway. What is low light though? 150 W metal halide in a small tank? 4 X 54 W T5s? Or power compacts/Vhos over a deep tank?

Certainly some of the Echinoporas seem less light loving and would qualify your statement but echinophyllias and to a lesser extent Oxyporas always get moved around in some very intense light when I am looking for their sweet spot.

Again, not trying to start an argument but just not seeing the best out of my corals in low light.
