Wow after reading though 90 + pages of the greatest thread I have seen so far all I can say is WOW!

First, Thanks to all who are involved in this thread for not only hooking me on chalices but providing some of the best macro shots of them that i have seen. It really helps to drive you into making your tank all it can be and taking the tests and husbandry very seriously! Kigs had gotten me hooked on Acans when i had already gone FOWLR because i was tired of acro's dieing from mishaps over the course of the last 2 years. Now after having purchased some stuff from Slojmn (which were amazing and arrived even better than in her pics) and having gotten a few from Kigs i can say i am hooked!

Just a few questions though. Obviously there are hardly any LFS around here with anything that looks like the chalices on here or anything they have in stock is brown, dieing and rediculously overpriced (Aquarium Adventure) so i have to ask, where do most of you go or rely upon for yours? Also how are you taking your photos (underwater camera, tripod and macro lense, small camera pushed up against the glass in macro, etc..)? What do you prefer to feed your chalices?
On a side note, i know there will always be people out there who want to be difficult and annoying and i just want to say that i really appreciate all who have added pics or knowledge to this thread since i accidentally gave in and started reading it 3 days ago. You cant please everyone, either with price or pics, but you just have to do what amuses you. Kev i don't know you, but you have added so much to this thread and hopefully you continue to give input and pics. This is a great thread and i hope it continues. Any responses would be great and i can't wait until my frags start to grow so i too can show some of them off.

Thanks,
Shawn

Hey Shawn,
Most of these awesome pieces you see on this thread are cherry picked from imports, vendors who get shipments every once in a while will get a killer piece. Chalice addicts are always on the lookout for LFS diamonds in the rough, you'd be amazed at a chalice that is brown and ugly in the LFS can turn into once it has been given some TLC. I would say the majority of the nicest pieces are imports that connected people are able to buy or split with other vendors, a lot of these come from high end LFS out on the West Coast as well. Your best bet is check your LFS early and often other than that, get to know some of the high end collectors here on RC. Guys and Gals like Pookstreet, Ian, Slojmn (Alicia) and Kigs always have killer stuff for sale every once and a while and you will be well on your way! Good Luck! and Enjoy!!!

Can any of you tell me if this chalice has a common name? Or if it is a common chalice? Just wondering, since I can not find a site that has chalice IDs and there are so many names out there.

Sara,
Your collection is gorgeous. I am loving the larger size of your Melting Pot. I have been contemplating putting some energy into acquiring a frag of the Meltng Pot. I hear they really start to color up as they get larger. It looks like yours is doing great. You have inspired me to track it down somehow, somewhere, LOL.

Thanks Alicia! I'll send you a PM ;)

Thank you Vince! I used large calcium reactor media for the substrate. And I have no idea why all those chalices are getting along so well and not stinging each other! Just one big happy family I guess!:D

Thanks Pnoy!

I think I might copy your idea as try the same substrate, Sara. Do you think it contributes to faster growth?

Vince - I'm not sure if it contributes to faster growth or not ... I just prefer the look. I'm going to try it in my new shallow look-down tank as well as it will be easy to vacuum if needed and won't get tossed around by flow.

Ok, you folks have me hooked. I need some chalices!

I have two tanks and want to put them where they will do best.

One tank has 250 DE 20K Ushio MH's and moderate flow and the other tank has lower lighting with T5's and less flow.

Should I put them in the MH tank in the light, the MH tank partially shaded or in the T5 tank? How about flow?

Thanks!
Joyce

I have far better results with chalices and favias under low t5 lighting and moderate flow. Colors come out you weren't aware of.

Thanks Fish n Frags. That is what I thought from reading some of these threads.

Is it the same with Acans? How about Plate Corals? I need to stock the new 180 gallon with the T5's.

Thanks!
Joyce

I agree, have you seen the colors Kigs is getting with his T-5's! WOW the colors he is getting are taking these pieces to another level!

My only gripe on T5s is its way to easy to manipulate the color of corals. The first time I saw this was when a buddy of mine using T5s had yellow eagle eye zoas.

LED Blues are the next big thing for making the coral colors explode!! Saw some AAA Ultra Grade Acans under them and the colors were rediculous. Once i got them home they didnt look nearly as good under my MH's but after the blue moonlights all night, they really shined under the T5s in the morning. It's really what you like. The MH make things grow better and makes SPS really pop but the T5 actinics make some things look better than others. I have SPS, LPS, Zoa's and palys under my MH with T5 and they all look great at different times of the day. But that's just my opinion and how I prefer them to look!

If you guy's like kigs stuff you should check him out on manhattanreefs, he does have some tuely stunning stuff. He has a pic of BJW posted and it looks like a p'd off alien...lol

Hopefully he'll post a pic here of it.
