Thanks for the answers BeakerBob, Roblack, tmz. Browsing this thread has confirmed that I want a few of these in my last tank, so thanks to all for the inspiration!

This isnt very rare or special but it is about 10" in diameter which is pretty decent sized for a chalice I am told.

I think it very nice

Thanks guys,

The colors actually vary quite a bit across the coral. I bought it online under the description Echinophyllia aspera/Red Chalice. I got it as a small frag about 1.5 years ago. I like it but it is nothing like some of these really exotic pieces I have seen in this thread.

I think you are going to be surprised. I think that ranks right up there with the nicest ones. Its got quite the sparkle to it. I LOVE it. If you ever frag let me know.

Here ya go Kev!

Here is a shot in 2006 under 250 watt 14K Hamilton SE bulb only:

Here are todays shots under 250 watt 14K Phoenix DE with T-5 Superblue bulbs. I have it under brighter lighting conditions now than I did in 2006.

sweet piece BeakerBob!!!!!
Thanks!! Actually, I' beginning to rethink my lighting scheme based on Kenny's picture of the Orange Sherbert. Maybe I have them in too much light and the colors are getting hard and washed out. Additionally, I see that the greens have changed more towards blue. Looking at my 2006 Wildfire picture, the colors seem more saturated and softer, kinda mellow in fact.

My next experiment now is to slice both OS & Wildfire in half and put half in lower, shaded light and keep the other half in the brighter light. Then, watch the color & growth on them to compare the halves.

yes time for this trust me it will be an awesome piece... ;)

Update on my Orange Sherbert...I spun it around and left it to sit for a bit still shaded mostly by my soli and lo and behold the back half looks just like the pictures Kenny posted...the eyes were even that sick orange color. So it stays shaded by my soli from now on...It is really nice on that back half :D. I know, I know, worthless without a picture but I am slammed and probably wont get to break out the camera until next weekend.

Bob, Great shots of the Wildfire, very interesting color shift. Mine is completely out in the light at the bottom of the tank...it looks like that first shot for sure.

Wow so is it better to have most of these shaded under overhangs or is it just trial and error with them?

not all of them need to be shaded, there are Chalice's that love light as well, you just got to get familiar with the pieces to know what each one likes and even then as you can see different light will cause different color morphs

+1 on Kev not all of them need to be shaded.. I have some that are highlight, med and low light.. Basically you are also partially correct bush as all corals are trial and error. Meaning you need to find a space for them to grow and shine :)

Reason I said be patient cuz I know one guy who has similar one like that and one thing you know it turn to something special..
