No, they are not the same :( Its too bad "since they came in around the same time" and they look similar, people think and actually market it that way. Maybe Bob can chime in as I have been told by multiple sources of the 4 color that they came from another colony than James' golden eye. I have the 4 color and it is not the goldeneye, its the 4 color.

You picked a nerve as I can not stomach it everytime I see it on websites or on ebay....Ahhhh, I feel better now :)
Mark, don't hold back, get it off your chest!!

The truth of the matter is....I don't know any more.

I got my 4-color chalice around '04 or '05 from MarineHabitats and have not seen any chalice with the same color dimensions that it shows. Last year, the same chalice, using my picture below was now being marketed as the "4-Color Chalice AKA Tyree Goldeneye challice", stating that it was a "... twin to the Goldeneye challice. Acquired in a wild shipment right about the same time Tyree added his to the LE collection."

Based on this description, I do not believe that the 4-color is the same as the Goldeneye. However, I don't have the Goldeneye to compare with my 4-color, so I will leave that up to the collectors that have both corals to answer that question.

That picture is one of my favorites of all time and that picture is one of the reasons it was a must have when I picked it up a couple years back.

Thanks for the input Bob.

Brian,
I can't see your pictures at the moment, school net blocks them...But Tyree's GoldenEye is the same as the Aquascene Golden Eye. He got the frag from James at the Aquascene store in the Bay area and made it an LE some years ago. He notes all this on his site under the coral. It is now in the retired section I believe. I got my piece directly from James off the mother colony...it looks identicle to the pictures on Tyree's site.
Alicia Thanks! I didnt know this. I was told by someone that there are two... did you have the chance to compare these pictures to your corals?

They're the same coral I believe. I don't think Matt sold corals as frauds, he was a little before that became a problem. PM 'Al G Blenny' and ask if he remembers the lineage...

The site/person I bought it from says its real. I did PM him and emailed him (downright harrased him :)) and he said "If you bought it from me its real" thats it. Not much help, but in his defense I heard his system crashed and he has a lot on his mind right now. Another (local) LE coral selling website owner says it isnt real... at first I thought he was trying to get a better deal, but he just wanted to return for a full refund? Someone is wrong... but I'm not smart enough to know who. I was hoping to get more opinions - like "I have it and your photos dont look like it", or "yep thats what I have"... I dont plan on starting an issue with anyone, I just dont want to trade/sell it as the real thing if it isnt real.

Rpnoy....SERIOUSLY how are you getting these rediculous shots? Are you using a camera box from the top down or is the camera on a tripod? Is this a macro lens and what camera are you using? The shots you get make me want to go buy your camera!!

Hello Brian, Like I discussed in PM, Matt had an awesome thing whenit was up and running. He was also local to James and Matt was responsible for many sweet pieces that helped carve the hobby as we know it today. Everything aside, if Matt sold it as the dealio, then I'd believe it is/was. As a business owner back then, if a piece was already marketed a certain name, great, but if you got an equally nice piece, you wanted to coin it under your brand to hype up your business. It was a lot different a few years ago as people did not care about coa's (what a joke :() and things like that.

Saying that, I have seen the golden eye a few different times under a few different set ups. It has looked different in everyone. That could be the different in lighting, zeo or no zeo, and other basic husbandry techniques. Its not a distinctive piece like the PP/MH. When you see the eyes on that piece, there is no doubt if it is that piece.

I can understand where you are coming from and I appreciate the route you are going as there are more people that try to figure out if a piece looks similar so they can hike it up. Thank you for taking the time to inquire.

Many of the older pieces were not scoured upon like they are today. Alicia and Roy are just a couple of the few that I know that walked in and got a piece of the original from James.

I know that this may not give you the answer you are looking for, but I also wanted to say thanks for helping the rest of us.

Orlandobrian i can tell you one thing here and that is they are some pretty sweet pieces whatever they are. Also they look a little overgrown for their space and i feel you need to frag them!! :)

I have a colony just like that but mine has lost a lot of the blue and green in it. What lighting, distance, etc. do you have this piece under?
