Changed to T5 lighting, a few pictures to share

I took out the camera and top down viewer and snapped a few photos, thought I would share how things are looking since I changed to T5 lighting. The change happened on 6-1-14

Found that T5 color not as RICH (still beautiful) as LED but T5 works for all kind of SPS. LED doesn't work for every SPS.

That's the only reason I still have halides in my system. I run AI hydra 52 LEDs for 10hours to enjoy the benefits of LEDs and I run 400watt radiums for the last 2hours. The acros never lost color and growth and really saves me on utility.

Thanks everyone!

Anthony, there were several things that led to the change. First off, I was still having acro recession that persisted in the display but if the coral was fragged and put in the sump frag area it would encrust and grow. Similar frag would recede in the display. Frags that grew into mini colonies that encrusted and were actively growing down below would recede within weeks in the display. Same water. Interestingly the light over the frag area is a blue/white only led panel. Lighting was the only thing I hadn't changed, so the possibility of my LED being the issue kept burning in the back of my head.

Also, the color to me was always a bit washed out for acros and my acans morphed to orange colors in a lot of cases. Both of these issues were rectified by adding 2 t5's to the mix, a Fiji purple and pure actinic. I honestly do miss the "avatar mode" in the morning and evening with just the 440 and 470 led though.

Then we went to Upscales in Portland and both my wife and I were blown away by the colors Travis had in his display. He is running 8 t5's with 3 kessils in the middle.

So that clinched it, I was honestly almost ready to throw in the towel with acros at that point so I changed them out.

Since then, most of the acros that were having problems simply stopped receding and re-grew over the dead area. Some needed to be fragged and are doing fine. A couple are still not quite happy. And the colors are amazing. The corals looked better to me immediately and have colored up even more in the 6 weeks since.

One caveat with the lighting theory, I did put my chiller back on line soon after I changed lights. The temp was flirting with high 82's quite regularly during the summer with the LED and even though I had fans, the t5 were too.
Since I changed this so close to the light change, I will never be sure what the real problem was. Many of my fellow RARE members are still running the same led without the same issues I had.

I am running an 8 bulb 80 watt LET lighting retro with individual reflectors

4 Blue Plus
1 Coral Plus
1 Fiji Purple
1 Pure actinic Geisemann
1 true actinic (ATI)

Photoperiod is
1 blue plus and 1 actinic 11am to 11pm
All 8 bilbs 11:30am to 7:30pm

What LED fixture did you have ? Maybe it's certain fixtures ?
I've had the hydra 52 no issue so far color and growth still excellent :)

Yes, it was. I forgot to change my signature. Fixed it now.

I had phenomenal success and growth for the first year I had them. Still had good growth and color with some acros until the end. All LPS seemed to do just fine, grew very well. Color shift was common with acans. Some zoas thrived, some not so much but that could be the SPS friendly parameters.

There is no doubt in my mind that some acros will simply not thrive under the LED's I had. Blue/royal blue/ white. Maybe some of the newer tech will take care of that.

I'm totally happy for now.

Beautiful photos of your amazing coral collection, thanks for sharing!

What is your impression on the LET retro? I am considering purchasing the 48" version for my 90g

Thank you !
The LET retro is outstanding, and as the reflectors clip to the bulbs, you have the ability to tilt them to keep more usable light from the outer bulbs in the display

Not sure if they would be the same for different length bulbs 48"/60" but I am curious how wide each reflector measures?

You didn't happen to snap any pics of the kit during installation did you?
