Thanks everyone!
Anthony, there were several things that led to the change. First off, I was still having acro recession that persisted in the display but if the coral was fragged and put in the sump frag area it would encrust and grow. Similar frag would recede in the display. Frags that grew into mini colonies that encrusted and were actively growing down below would recede within weeks in the display. Same water. Interestingly the light over the frag area is a blue/white only led panel. Lighting was the only thing I hadn't changed, so the possibility of my LED being the issue kept burning in the back of my head.
Also, the color to me was always a bit washed out for acros and my acans morphed to orange colors in a lot of cases. Both of these issues were rectified by adding 2 t5's to the mix, a Fiji purple and pure actinic. I honestly do miss the "avatar mode" in the morning and evening with just the 440 and 470 led though.
Then we went to Upscales in Portland and both my wife and I were blown away by the colors Travis had in his display. He is running 8 t5's with 3 kessils in the middle.
So that clinched it, I was honestly almost ready to throw in the towel with acros at that point so I changed them out.
Since then, most of the acros that were having problems simply stopped receding and re-grew over the dead area. Some needed to be fragged and are doing fine. A couple are still not quite happy. And the colors are amazing. The corals looked better to me immediately and have colored up even more in the 6 weeks since.
One caveat with the lighting theory, I did put my chiller back on line soon after I changed lights. The temp was flirting with high 82's quite regularly during the summer with the LED and even though I had fans, the t5 were too.
Since I changed this so close to the light change, I will never be sure what the real problem was. Many of my fellow RARE members are still running the same led without the same issues I had.
