Just thought id share this due to some places overpricing this stuff so much. i get my instant ocean in the 160 gallon mix (5 gallon bucket) for 39 dollars at petsmart in aurora ohio. (right by where the geauga lake used to be.

That sounds pretty good for an actual store. The best place I found to buy salt from was www.drsfosterandsmith.com

It used to be like $40 shipped to your door for the 160g mix of ReefCrystals.

However, I just checked and noticed they upped their price to around $50 before shipping for it now. :(

The cheapest place i have found it is Reef systems it runs 32ish for a 5 gallon bucket. If you buy three of the bags it makes like 5 more gallons (or 5 gallons less i can rember) for a couple of dollars less. I know that it is a drive for you guys just thought i would share my experience. This was the last time i bought salt about 2 months ago. but i don't think he changes the price very much.

Keep your eyes open for the new 200 gallon PRO size of both IO and RC. It is shipping already and will save you a few bucks. It is 4 - 50 gallon bags in a box. The bags are unlabeled to save some$$. We used to just sell the IO this way for store use, but changed strategy recently.

Also, FWIW, the places that you think are overpricing it are actually charging what they are supposed to. It is the places like Petsmart and DFS that are selling it way cheap. If I told you guys what wholesale price was, you wouldn't believe me!

Spstoner. Are you saying that I should be buying it more expensive then I should just because petsmart can afford to sell it cheaper. I don't care what it costs wholesale. I'm not going to pay more for the same salt IMHO

I dont think he is?I think he is talking about the IO that comes in the box.Which contain 4 bags which make 200g
Its like a couple dollars more for the box than the bucket at salty

Not at all. Get the best price you can find, of course. Just saying that the places where you may think they are overcharging may not be. They are most likely just not willing to sell it for less than they pay for it.

Petsmart is a huge company that buys a LOT of product, and they buy it direct from the manufacturer. Most LFS have to buy from a distributor, thus there is a second markup on the product. My post was only meant to clarify that perhaps it is worth a few dollars more to support a good LFS rather than the giant box store.

Sorry to derail your thread. :)

reef systems and phishy have it for $10 bucks a bag, at reef systems its like $3 or $5 bucks more for the bucket which i think got you 10 gal more worth. they are both drives but lately i've been down in columbus for other reasons seems like almost every weekend. looking to grab a few more frags from either place this weekend :)

Just figure out how far each place is from your house than add the fuel cost is it better to buy a bag for lets say from joe blow for $10 and drive 30miles to get it.Or is is more economical to get it fro joe shmoe for $15 and drive 5 miles.Just a dumb point, but I always consider it.

Not a dumb point IMO. People need to consider these things.
