cheap leds to make light

i took a quick look on ebay and there are so many different types of leds on there, i was thinking of making a light not so much for keeping corals but to see if it would give me the shimmer effect since i had t5s. I was thinking about 100 leds or maybe more but i dont know what they mean by mcd, some say 5000 and go up to 100,000. Has anyone tried this with cheap leds,i can get about 100 for 8 bucks.

Go with 4-5 3 watt K2 LEDS. About 6 bucks and can be driven with a $1.50 mosFET

where do you get them, they seem like they all come for flashlights
