Raw88 is offering live rock at $1/lb. Id hate to pass this up. he has 100 lbs he needs to dump. What is a cheap/easy way to keep this alive untill we need it. I can put it in a garbage can with a NO light, heater and power head. Would that be sufficient? I'd like to give him an answer ASAP.

OK, I called jason (Raw88)and the rock is still available. He said there is some hair algae on it since he has been neglecting his tank of late. I suppose we can scrub it off and light deprive it till its gone. He will call me to let me know when we can pick it up. Vince, why don't you pm me your phone number so we can hook up to get it. I have a large rubbermaid tub we can transport it in and I can store it in my basement.

Sweet deal Jerry.....A few weeks of light deprivation will get rid of the HA and will actually prime the rock for when were ready to us it....keep the heat on the low side....75ish is good from what I have learned, Pods will take off like crazy and don't worry about changing too much water....but use a couple of powerheads to keep the flow going good. Sounds like we have a good start and some good seed rock to add to our DIY....

Well I just picked up the live rock. Man was it heavy! I have a spare 55 gallon tank that is its temporary home. I have a big powerhead on it. Hair algae isn't too bad but very little coraline algae. I'll try to remedy that by adding two part additives and kalkwasser. At least half is base rock but there are some decent pieces of live rock. If anyone has a couple of pieces of coraline covered rock they could spare for a while to help seed the tank please let me know. I threw in a couple of small pieces but it could use more. All of mine have coral on it which would die under light deprived conditions. All in all, very worth the $100.

I was thinking we should put to practice the suggestion of high alkalinity to rid the rock of bryopsis and hair algae and at the same time increase the coraline.
I believe the magnesium was pushed up to 1100 which totally knocked off the algae and increased the coralline

You can keep light deprived for weeks without really losing any coraline....it may pale out a bit, but once you add light it will color up with in a couple weeks....St.james has a good point, about Alk and Mag...bring them up to upper end of the scale and the HA will die off real quick as well as any other unwanted Algae's
