Cheap sand bed?????

The dolomite that i have in the pic is very white. blindingly so in the sunlight. it looks absolutely beautiful as a substrate, the user here "playwithbob" had it as his substrate in his former 180 and i was very impressed. At the end of the month im going to tear down and re-build my tank and replace the sand, i'll get some pics then. I just gotta get through finals first.

Just a suggestion. I too am looking for a large amount of substrate for a DSB. Check with your local large concrete company. Some of the things we are looking for are sold as additives for concrete like calcium. May have some luck with a calcium based sand or dolomite.

This has not been easy to find in Florida. I am going to need like 300 lbs of it.
Shipping is going to kill me, if i can not find it locally.

I am looking for about 400-500lbs in Kansas City as well. There is a rock quary that others have gotten sand from around here, I'm giving them some more time with it in their tank to see if there have adverse effects....

Should be no problem finding it in KC as the amount of limestone, marble and such there is huge. The Hall Mark caves there are just the man made caves from Limestone and Marble mining.
Check out: Jerusalem Stone Company. ... 319 West 79th Terrace • Kansas City, MO 64114. T: 816.444.4405 info@jerusalemstoneusa.com

I was born and raised in the suburbs of KC in a place called Gladstone.

Is dolamite silicate free? I don't know but he is a bad mutha-shut your mouth!
Also is the crushed oyster shells a good choice for DIY rock? I have heard completely mixed reviews. From it causes algae outbreaks, increase in phosphates etc to it is great for a reef aquarium being calcium carbonate.

Dolomite is a combination of a sedimentary carbonate rock and a mineral (magnesium) and silica is usually not present.

Crushed oyster shells are fine when used as an ingrediant in home made live rock as the cement seals the precipitates that are typically present on oyster shells.

My local Petco caries huge bags of "dead" Caribsea sand for pretty cheap if i remember correctly. It wasn't much more to buy the Caribsea sand than regular play sand from HD. But this was awhile ago when I was making frags - the prices may have changed by now.

Well, I just about had it, looking for this type of sand in Florida.

So far, the places I can order and like the sand are these two.

And

I sent kgross a PM, hoping to get a phone number to that store where he gets his sand.

Try this place. It was $6 a bag, last time I bought some.

Can you provide me a name of the product, that i am looking for?

Every time I ask about this stuff, I get the blinking eye look.

Makes life much easier if I can ask for the product by name, when I call them on Monday.
Thank you.

Chemical Lime's Dolowhite Pool Grade Dolomite Sand, or just ask for Dolomite Pool Sand. They will know what you're talking about.

Call the Meridian location, as that is where I pick it up.
