Cheap way of cooling your tank!

Forget CPU fans

Go to walmart and buy a LASCO PIVOTING TASK FAN, it can be found for $14.00.

It puts out 450CFM, is silent, has two speeds, can pivot up and down, and can fit under my 6" canopy. The thing moves 6x what the average cpu fan moves.

The best thing is, it's silent!

I have one at my comp. desk. I like the fact that it focuses the air better than a regular fan.

Wait, I just figured out that it makes a bit of noise on the high setting. But on low, it keeps my 125g cool enough. Works for me!

Pic: It fits perfectly in the gap created by the glass tops.

Looks good,
Maybe you can save me a trip.Do you have the dimensions?Don't have much room but would like to give it a try. Also what is the wattage consumption?
thanks...

yep!

evap cooling from a fan is not only cheap but very very effective at cooling a tank down.

here is a 'limited lifetime warrenty' vornado fan that sits about 2" from my water surface.

it is connected to a temp controller (expensive part) to turn on at 78 degrees. then i have a chiller to turn on at 80 degrees. the fan is so effective...the chiller rarely comes on...unusual for one having all his equipment in the garage in southern california (read esp in the summer!!!:D).

Sitting upright how it' shows in the picture:

7"H 6"W 6 1/2"L

How I have it:

5" high 6"W 6 1/2"L

So far, it's cooled my 125g 2-3F. It uses about 50watts on high and about half that on low. Remember, the fan won't be on all the time, probably just during the day anyway.

I remember seeing that one too at Wal Mart but i decided to buy this one for 20$. It fits perfectly between the edge and my lights and its also very quiet.

Do you happen to know the dimensions of that fan? Wondering if I can fit that under my canopy to cool down some overdriven T5's. I have about 6" of height space under the canopy.

I was looking at both of these fans at wal-mart for the last couple of weeks.

I really like the fact the second one has a clip that can hold it into the hood.

I think I'm going to grab one when I get off work.

thanks all.

Daniel

where did you get a temp controler to run your fan? how expensive are they? ive been running my wal mart fan on the same timer with my halides. thanks

i use the honeywell fans from wallmart. they are absolutely perfect. 3 settings and can be mounted vertically horizontally upside down etc and the head rotates almost 360 degrees. after a half dozen box and round fans, this is the one im sticking with.

yes, this is the same fan that ive got. i absolutely love it. i ran it on level 1 during the colder months, and just recently kicked it up to high! it keeps my tank in the 78-80 degree range.

i got a medusa temp controller on the used equipment forum. something like $75 or so.

i also have fans blowing 24/7 on my tank top to move hot air generated from my halides...

something like this:

my set up is to not evap cool from the display...evap cooling is done at the sump level where i can a much more powerful fan to do a more effective job.

Thanks bergzy. I was thinking of the medusa but it is quite expensive new. Ill try and look for one used as I would rather have a medusa in case I ever get a chiller

How much water evap do you have with this? I go camping in the summer and I have had at tank crash because of the heat. This looks very effective but my only concern is the top off water. Any idea how much top off water you use?
