Cheap way of cooling your tank!

Uh, it depends on humidity....but on my 125g with the fan on low, it will bring the water down an inch in about 2-3 days.

I bought a Medusa & a .5hp chiller, but haven't needed the chiller. So I never setup the Medusa
But I think I will now & connect my larger fans to the Medusa
Smaller fan can turn on with the 2nd MH

i talked to deltec and the tech said that with their eco-chiller...yes, it is possible to cool your tank below room temp.

the eco chiller is nothing more than a wet dry filter with a fan blowing through the meshing to increase the surface area for the evap of water.

make sure you have excellent ventilation for all that water you are getting rid of in the atmosphere.

i am planning to build one most likely in a couple of months. i already have the rudimentary plans worked out in my head...which took about two minutes to figure out! total cost should be about $60 to $75 ecluding the fan because i already have a profoundly powerful fan that i use for evap cooling that sits about 3 inches from my sump water surface...

it is so effective that my chiller rarely comes on except on the hottest days...and my garage with all my equipment gets really hot in the summer here in southern cal!

the hard part was trying to locate the spray bar...but i found where to order it! from deltec! :D

I've been doing some tests with my fan.

With a room temp of 82F, and a tank temp of 84F, the fan brought it down to 80.5F.

I removed the side panels off my fan, and now even on high, it cannot be heard over my Emp 400's.

Keep in mind, I live in one of the most humid climates. Humidity outside right now is 73%. The less humid it is, the better cooling you will get.

Bergzy,
Just go to Lowes in the evaporative cooler aisle. They have all sorts of replacement parts, spray bars included:)

okay,

that is just too awesome. imagine paying $1800 for a small swamp cooler?

thanks much!

There is actually an evaporative cooling aisle at Lowes?? The spray bars would be nice for an idea I have.

Well in ATL they may not sell as many as your climate is a bit more humid than mine. But yes, they have the media, spraybars, tubing, everything! I also noticed that the replacement cooler pump plugs are just like the ballast to lamp connections on PFO ballasts:)

Re: Cheap way of cooling your tank!

just wanted say I bought one of these fans today and I is amazing what this thing did for my tank, my tank has always been between 81-83 degrees. I put this fan about 4" from the water in my sump and my tank has been about 79 degrees for about four hours now. I almost bought this fan about 5 mounts ago and, I wish I did.

Why waste time buying one in the hot weather? Why waste more wattage?

For all of you who have sump, get yourself 2 2ltr bottles of soda or w/e fill them up with water freeze them and drop them in. Have 2 more in the freezer waiting for swaping.

and people say this hobby is expensive:rolleyes:

I don't have time to swap out bottles all day long! I work and have other things to do!
why waste wattage opening up your freezer all day long?
what about when you are not home?

The bottle thing is good I an emergency, but It is not good for you corals to move the temp up and down all day long, and if you have a auto-top-off on your tank it will not work right with you moving bottles in and out of the sump all day long. plus making the salinity go up and down.

so I say use more wattage and keep your tank more consistent.:D

Your just asking for trouble for doing that. The super cold water in the sump will kill most of the filter feeding pod, and other things that live in the sump, especially if you use live rock like I do in the sump.

Use a fan, low cost, low maintenance, and you don't have to change it out every day.
