Cheaper skimmers - am I crazy

I need a skimmer for a 55 gallon tank. I here everyone say don't skimp on the skimmer, but hey who is not short on mullar.
So what are the problems with cheap skimmers? If it makes bubbles it works? Whats the difference between good and bad ones?

Good ones work and don't need constant adjusting. Bad ones don't worl, blow bubbles in the tank, and need constant tweaking.

Good budget skimmers are the Octopus Skimmers and the Coralife SuperSkimmer. Bad budget skimmers are the CPR BakPak and the SeaClone and the Prizm.

Nothing cost as much as cheap equipment.
That's the stuff of fortune cookies. :D

On the cheap(er) end, I like the CSS and a 125 would be nice on your tank, the 65 would be okay.

Keep an eye out for used equipment sales. You can keep a constant eye on the selling forum here at RC. Also, getting in with local reef clubs is a great way to find good deals.

YOU DID NOT JUST SAY "IF IT MAKES BUBBLES IT WORKS":blown:

The differance is, the good ones are better than the bad ones.:rolleye1:

Amen!

With lousy equipment, you end up spending way more than you expect as you end up trading up when you get frustrated with the unit and then you can't sell it for anywhere what you pay. It's an ongoing vicious cycle. Do it right once and you actually save money in the long run.

UCanDoIt's right, when you buy cheap equipment you end up paying more in the long run. The people who are telling you not to skimp are the ones who have skimped and now know better. Reef Octopus makes a good skimmer for a reasonable price. Get one rated for about twice your tank size, that way when you upgrade you don't have to buy another one.

You will not beleive the difference a good skimmer makes. I have tried several... cheapest.. to cheaper... and now I have decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. The cheaper skimmers just dont pull out skimmate. Yeah... they "make bubbles"... but it takes weeks... or longer... to get a god amt of skimmate collected. Then, if you buy an ASM G3, or some other good skimmer.... you pull out the same amount in a day or 2. literally. Your skimmer is going to have a big effect (A BIG EFFECT) on your water quality. Dont skimp on:

*Skimmer
*Lighting
*Water Flow
*Test Kits

IMHO. Take it from me. Dont learn the hard way.... that being said... I think that everyone in this hobby learns the hard way! :)
