Cheato eating question...

It's hit or miss with all of these, but Acanthuridae (Tangs and Surgeonfish), Rabbitfish, Turbo Snails, Astrea Snails, Trochus Snails, Emerald Crabs, Sea Hares, and Lettuce Nudibranchs have all been reported to much on Chaetomorpha algae from time to time.

I didn't realize tangs may eat this, I'll keep that in mind when shopping for a regal. Now does anybody know nutritional value of cheato as a supplimented food?

all fresh algaes are good. They supply magnesium and phosphate.

You're sure right about the phosphate! I learned the hard way after being unable to get my caulerpra to grow in the fuge, the algea bloom and cyno was unreal! I like cheato better :D

yep, chaeto beats caulerpa in the biomass it accumulates under the same conditions.

Having said that I have a strain of caulerpa that grows crazy.......I cant remember the name of it, but it has flat little plates all ove it.

Im sure Travis knows.

My tangs devour this caulerpa.

Paul.

hey paul, interested in trading some of that caulepra for some cheato? The only fish I'm 100% about for the 150g I bought is a Regal Tang, so anything I can grow myself in a refug for him/her will be awesome!

Was that the Caulerpa peltata that you got from me?

Honestly, from all the experiences that I have, some of the different Caulerpa species actually take up nutrients faster than Chaetomorpha. But their likelihood of going sexual is just too great of a risk to keep in a tank that you have invested thousands of dollars. But, Chaetomorpha comes in a very close second place. And best of all, it's not as chemically noxious as other species of Caulerpa.

I'm thinking of doing a stand alone refugium for the sole purpose of macro-algea, I like the idea of culturing as much of the food stuffs myself. sea monkeys, mysis, coepods, phyto, ect ect ect...
While I'm mentioning this, any recommendations as far as growing macro for Regal Tang consumption? I have some green grape algea still but I don't think my coral beauty would let anyone else eat it, he made if very clear that grape algea belongs to him and him alone.

You might want to look into softer, less noxious algaes such as Lettuce Algae. One thing that I've always wanted to do was to attempt to make my own nori. Just grow a hole bunch of different algaes, harvest them, toss them in a blender with various vitamin supplements like Selcon, and the put them in a dehydrator to make sheets of them.

Sonya's already said it was okay for me to dry out some blended meaty food to attempt to make a flake food like item. But I don't know how well dehydrated shrimp, fish, octopus, squid, scallops, etc would smell like. I don't think I want to risk my house smelling like that for a couple days (or linger for more).

the caulerpa pictured above is correct, and my tangs love it.

I may culture it for that very reason alone.

I add half a handfull on a clip, ten minutes later, all gone.

Travis, you're right on with my thinking here, Nori would be nice to grow, I havn't heard or read too much about culturing that particular type though. And I totally sympathize about the smell issues. As many of you know, I keep freshwater, specifically Discus. I feed them a 50/50 mix of beefheart and squished garlic on a daily basis, and I kid you not that after the lingering garlic smell is gone from the kitchen, the stuff put in the tank smells up the whole house...BAD!!! I love garlic and all, but good god almighty!

What are you trying to say dugg? it's not like we'll get together and make baby oil or anything! LOL

man i love that quote.
