Cheato turning gray.

Well its been (3) weeks and seems like every other day Im still picking out the grape strands here and there.

I looked into the macro forum and the other caulerpa that I thought was prolifera is actually or appears to be caulerpa sertularioides.

The sertularioides has become dominate in the fuge with the cheato just hanging in there mostly on the bottom with still much lamp light.

Are you familiar with this type of caulerpa, Does caulerpayne effect
fish and corals or just other plant life?

IME it will basically outcompete many species including chaeto.
I do not think it will hurt anything else unless it has the capability of becoming sexual. Use Carbon if you notice too much tanins discolouring your water.

These two caulerpas look quite different from one another. Sertularoides has large featherlike leaves, and Prolifera has long blades.

Most people dont experience problems with caulerpa releasing caulerpenyne. It's mostly for detering herbivores, and doesnt usually get released in large amounts unless the plant is broken or sporulates ( goes sexual ).

Yes they are quit different looking.

A while back when I received a batch, that was what the fellow had called it.

What type of fixture/bulb/time do you fellows use over your refuge?

Right now I am running some tests to grow chaeto under different modes. The first part of the test as a tumbling ball with high flow under 110Watt PC (which is what most people try to replicate) The other half was in a slow flow area spread without tumbling and under 175 matt metal halide.
So far in this first part the one spread without tumbling and under metal halide grew at least three times faster than the tumbling ball under lower lighting.

For the second phase of the trial I switched the lamps, now the tumbling ball is under Metal Halide and the spread one is under the PC compact.
Hope the second part of the trial will tell me if the extraordinary growth was due to light intensity or if it was due to lower flow and spread.

Here you can see the difference in growth:

This is the setup, a 55 gal refugium receiving about 600 gph from the main tank. The ball is kept tumbling by the high flow from the maxijet 1200 PH.
here the ball is under the 110 watt 10K PC hood and the spread one is under the MH 175 watt 10K

Excellent. Good suspension and healthy green growth at each batch. Big difference in their size.

It looks like you have 100% cheato in both areas.

How are you keeping each area divided from one another? I see the maxi is the other flow coming from a return from that overflow

Yes it is only chaeto.
The tank is not divided, the two batches are kept apart by the flow of the powerhead.
The powerhead directs the flow to the lower half on the left side of the tank which creates a swirling motion that keeps the chato ball tumbling and floating as it rises to the top half but also after swirling around in the area were the ball is the flow comes out from that area trough the upes half of the tank from left to right over the powerhead thus keeping the floating chaeto tucked on the right side.
The ball is tumbling and turning about eight to ten times per minute.

Simplicity is beauty

How long have you been conducting this experiment?

Five weeks this weekend.

There could be an impact with the two differing light fixtures/bulbs
That is what I hope to find out.
