i am growing cheato in my sump and have a pc 7500w light should it be on with the tank lights or on when tanks lights are off? also i plan on running it like 8 hours is that enough?
Yea I run my sump light at night from 10:00 PM to 10:00 AM opposite of my actinics on the timer.... I have heard it helps balance PH when you do it this way, but I may be completely wrong on that...
Yes, it is best to run the refugium lights opposite the display lights. It does keep pH more stable that way. However with cheato, Melev runs his fuge lights 24/7 and that seems to work for him. He also says that 5100k works best for the cheato.
Cheato requires a dark period and doesn't do near as well at nutrient export on a 24/7. All plants do actually. In fact only about half as much growth on the last study I read.
It will help with pH swings if you do a reverse daylight schedule.
If you use caulerpa though, you want to do 24/7 and the theory on that is that it keeps it from going into spore formation which is when it turns white and basicly melts in the tank and could also cause you to grow it in the display as well if the spores take hold. When that happens it will release all the phosphates and nitrates that it grew from. Thus negating any benefit from it in the first place.
I am running 23/7, i was listing to a talking reef podcast, and some biology guy recommend a small break, like a few minutes... I just haven't gotten arround to changing the timer. The calpera hasn't gone sexual in the months that I have had it
