Check out all these Aussie pieces at Atlantis!

Those prices are outrageous! US$80-100 per head for a standard Acan that you can get here for A$50-60 per COLONY! (around 20-30 heads typically) That's around US$40-50.
Even with shipping and maintenance costs factored in that's way over the top. That's just blatant profiteering.

LOL, easy to say when you live in Sydney, but I do agree we overpay for some corals and you overpay for some stuff we pay a few bucks for, WAY overpriced. But hey there is a sucker born every minute. Sweet corals but def. overpriced, but it is the new fad.

I believe the days of paying $40-100 per polyp for lords is over unless you have some captive raise true Pink ones. Just a matter of time before they collect on the other side of the continent and send them to the US.

Tell me, how much do cleaner shrimp cost over there?
Duncans were hundreds of dollars per polyp here a year ago before they began importing them. You could probably find a whole colony for cheap where you are.

yeah, I was thinking of buying a few pieces of Aussies but I think I'll wait a few months to see if we get some more stock in the US... they are absolutely awesome looking though.. :)

They got kids to feed. I know one thing...i dont see stuff like that in my local LFS. North Carolina reefers for the most part lack any real taste in nice corals.(i got over green star polyps a long time ago..lol) I would pay them what they wanted IF i had the money. The more I talk about the more I might do it anyways.

How much does ricordia cost over there?

Imports are still banned so we can't get R. floridas at any price. However, we do have local R. yumas although not as nice colours as you guys get. These are typically A$15-25 per polyp where normal discosomas are around A$5-10.
High prices here for things like cleaner shrimp etc are more to do with local availability, supply and demand, strict quarantine etc. Since no imports of inverts are allowed at all (fish are allowed) we can only get what is locally caught and with so few licenses granted and strict limits applied, invert availability varies.
Fish that are allowed in, yellow tangs for example, aren't that much more than locally caught fish. Local clown = A$40, tang = A$100. Allowing for import costs, 2 week quarantine, feeding etc it's pretty reasonable I think.
Corals don't deserve a 2000% markup IMO.

So you guys don't even get indo corals? They come in almost every other week here.

I doubt anyone would qt any aussie corals for 2 weeks. People are ready to break down the doors the moment the store owners return from the airport. The last shipment spent 1-2 days recovering before they were sold. In less then a day all were sold. I actually lost 2 polyps on one of mine but what can you do. The rest of the colony is healthy and whatever happend shows no sign of spreading. It was probably due to stress from fragging right after arriving. At the prices we pay it would be nice if they were qt but even if they did I don't think I could wait and most people probably feel the same.

No, no Indo corals or from anywhere else either. Local only. Fish are the only imports allowed in, and as I said they must be strictly quarantined. There's many people getting caught at the airports and through the post trying to smuggle in livestock of one sort or another. Fines are around $10000 from memory.
The fact that your imports aren't quarantined is even more reason to query the high prices as there's practically no other costs other than transport. Unless there's some sort of import duties or something?
Oh and keep in mind those prices I quoted are retail, I don't know what the wholesale prices are.

fish are quarantined by law?

Perhaps the difference is here in canada you don't have to worry much about realesing corals or fish into the oceans since most species would no survive here (yes i have read about the lionfish in nyc waters). Where as you risk invasive species in australia. I really can't believe you don't have indo corals.

There are a lot of fees importing and having the proper cites documents I believe. I really don't know what the cost of permits are. I doubt many people other then the stores that hold cites would have an idea how much they would cost. Perhaps someone knows how much they cost to get from indo? your exporter must also have cites.

The wholesale prices for a *small* colony of the cheaper Indo lords is about $45-60. I don't know the wholesale prices for Aussie lords because I've never gotten any, but they're definitely more than the Indos and much harder to get.
