They are not that rare at all. Platinum's are just a variety of percula that have been selectively bred over and over to produce the lack of natural colors found on them. Here is the story from ORA.

http://www.orafarm.com/products/fish/clowns/platinum.html

Show me where it said they were bred over and over? Platinums are not inbred.. They are selectively bred. One can easily imagine a scenario where two extreme "picasso" variant WC perculas were paired and bred.. This combo would likely produce a platinum clownfish.. The platinum variant has shown up probably dozens if not 100 times from breeders practicing selective techniques all over the country... I know for a fact that they can come from F2 generation, I would suspect F1 would produce them as well (this fish would have the same genetic diversity as any WC fish).. I wouldn't be surprised if it occurs naturally once every 10 millions births. It is certainly not a lack of natural color.. It is just different..

*the "blizzard" clownfish came out as about the same time and from a totally different origin...

I do not think he ment INBRED.

FWIW IMHO these platimums are FUGLY. They take the beauty out of the clown.

I never said that they were bred over and over implying inbreeding. I said that they were Selectively bred over and over. from ORA "ORA developed the Platinum Percula through years of selectively breeding our famous Picasso Clownfish" To me this means that they have done this over and over until they get consistant results not just the normal misbar's and such.

"It is certainly not a lack of natural color"

What I meant is when you say percula to almost anyone what comes to mind, a black, white and orange clownfish seperated by bars. Not a predominately white fish with hints of black and orange.
