I know it's not the ocean, but I think that these are some cool pics I took with just a disposable camera. This lake is right in town here in Ely MN, in fact it's about 300 yds from my back door. It used to be a pit mine but it has since filled, on most days visibility is around 35 to 40 ft. There are sunken cars, old fire rings, I found a digital camera in this lake too! and it still works!

Must have been like 300 of these guys schooling together,

This large mouth followed us around for about 20 minutes, it was very curious about us. We found a crayfish under a rock and fed it to him, he ate it, yawned like he was bored with us and split. Just looking for a free meal I guess.

This pic is just to show how much cover there is in this lake, It's fun to swim through and around all the submerged trees and stuff. I want to find a water scooter and take it for a spin in here.

If you like them I have a few more I can post as well, Let me know!

too cool, if I was THAT close to water, my gear would never get dry well except for the inside of my drysuit hopefully...

Some were taken at the surface, The lonely bass was at about 10 feet, the two bass I followed through a snarling thicket of branches in about 15 feet, I wish I would have waited on that one, as soon as I clicked the shutter, they both turned around and got within 7" of my mask. Thanks for looking at my pics!

Yeah fresh water shots can be nice, here is a shot from the last set of training dives I shot.

But saltwater is way better! Keep shooting the fresh water, then when you go on vaca you can get some good shots.

I don't know your budget, but try getting a simple point and shoot. The first pic was taken with my Nikon D100 DSLR, the second was taken with a Canon A640 both are in Ikelite housings. You can get into the A640 setup under $800 and get some really great shots.

This is my buddy Roger, If you look close you can see the sunken trees he is swimming towards in deeper water. I like this pic the best, I did'nt even have to touch it up at all !

I'm just messing around here. look pretty white don't I. I was born fair skinned,...... it's not my fault.

I really wish I could find some more pics from this covert operation,...see the zodiac in the background? My buddy Roger again. This was at the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior,...this area is only accessable by boat, it was on the north side of sand Island, one of the coolest places I've snorkeled so far, it is sandstone cliffs that have been carved into sea caves, you can swim under and through all kinds of natural arches and tunnels, it is so cool. I took my fins off here and ditched them in the zodiac (support team alpha, haha) had a waterproof flashlight and my trusty disposable,...These caves go back quite a way, swam and scrambled back as far as I could go, it was a little creepy. thats my sweeties head. in the water there. The Apostle Islands are on the southern shore and are part of the Wisconsin state park system I think.

Some more bass in Miners lake. It's frozen over for about 6-7 months of the year, is spring fed, and never really gets too warm past a couple of feet below the surface. You definitely feel the cold,...I don't care HOW thick your wet suit is,.....things shrivel and hide, haha, but it's worth it dammit!

I really need to get a quality underwater camera, I don't scuba, but do the freediving thing. I'm almost up to about a minute 45 underwater. I have done scuba before, but prefer the freedom of the freedive. It is much more quiet, you don't hear constant bubbles,...only your breath at the surface,...and hardly anything underwater,...Maybe a boat now and then, but that is it!

Ooops, I keep finding these as I'm cleaning up my desktop, might as well show them to some one,....this is Calvin, I was at the surface and he dove down about 20 feet or so, not a bad pic for a $10 disposable, I just don't like the fact that you toss all that stupid plastic casing away when you get the film developed. Hence my need for a CHEAP underwater digi. Anyone want to give me a smokin deal?, huh? anybody?

talked to my family lastnight, when they went up there fishing the never stayed at one lake.. so pretty much they would try and hit them all in Ely

Oh man, that would take forever and a day! Some guides up here only go to a few lakes here and there, the ones that produce, I try and hit the ones no one else will, looking for the ever elusive honey hole. Look at a map on google maps or some thing, do the satellite image and you will see how many there really are! It is amazing!

Fishing is awesome in that lake!, it is also a designated trout lake too. I went for another mission yesterday with a buddy, Water is still pretty cold, but this early in the summer you can still actually see the different thermoclines. The crayfish all have little eggs under their tails, and the panfish are starting to dig breeding pits, I'll post some more pics when I get the chance.

Thanks Beaner3, enjoyed the pics. I've passed your area many times on my way to our favorite "honey" holes in Canada.

Great Pics. I'm waiting for a tattoo to heal up so I can go hit our mudhole around here. I prefer Salt or Cave diving over lake diving, but the lake is 30 minutes away, and the Salt and Cave diving is 4-5 hrs. That is one clear lake. If I was right on a lake with that kind of viz I would always be in it. I am happy when I get 15' viz at our mudhole, but still see some of the same fish: Smallmouth/Large Bass, Catfish, Sunfish, spottail minnows, etc.. Great pics, just makes me want to go diving even more.
