Chemi-Pure Elite

Anybody use it? I went a little too long without changing my DI resin and started having some algae issues. I also disturbed a five year old sand bed and I'm sure that didn't help. I tried biopellets for about 4 months and couldn't see much improvement, so I put a bag of Chemi-Pure Elite in my reactor instead. I ran one bag for two weeks then added a second. A week later I was pretty impressed. The algae isn't gone but there is a lot less. I only test for alkalinity so I don't have any numbers to prove it, but I think I might be sold this stuff.

yeah, I have been using the pellets for about 5 months or so and the jury is still out on its effectiveness. I am going to solve my skimmmer issue before deciding as I know lack of consisent water levels is keeping it from operating at its maximum efficency. I have a jar of the chemi-pure and used it once and pulled it out and haven't gotten around to recharging it yet. I figure it can only help so I have some free time tonight so maybe I will get it back in...thanks for reminding me....

I think my GFO has the most affect as when I refresh it I see the most postive change. Have you tried that yet?

Pam put me onto the chemi as I saw it in her tank......so I think she is a believer....if I recall correctly she also has GFO in a dedicated reactor....

I've thought about running GFO, but I've always kept a basic approach. Until I added the biopellets, all I ever used was an oversized skimmer and a refugium with chaeto. I had a DSB in my fuge but I took it out... it's going back soon.

Chemi-Pure Elite, not the original, does have ferric oxide in it but I don't know how it compares to running GFO in a reactor.

...checked that when I got home and i was thinking of Purigen versus chemi pure...so haven't tried Purigen

An algae bloom is normal when introducing a biopellet reactor. I started mine the first week of June and the I am just now noticing the algae going away. However, according to two different Salifert test kits my Nitrates are 0 !!!

Kerry, you having skimmer issues??? I have 2 you are welcome to try out. One is over sized and should skim your system with no problem. The other is a POS but worked pretty good on my old 70 gallon.

I wanted to like the biopellets with all the hype that surrounds them, but I felt like 4 months was long enough. I do have some Marco rocks that were possibly adding to the problem. I soaked and rinsed them for a couple of weeks before adding them, and still had a pretty bad bryopsis problem for a while. The Chemi-Pure is working best for me.

I've got a nearly full 1L bag of NPX Bioplastics that I'll trade for a nice A. lokani or something similar... anyone?

I am still not totally sold on them myself. Maybe another month or two and I may switch to something else as well.

What else are BP suppose to do? I have read great on nitrates and phosphates, but is there any other advantages? Everything I have read says they are compared to vodka dosing, what exactly dose vodka dosing do?

I bought into the hype too. I never really had a nitrate problem before I started using them.

They're supposed to be a carbon source, just like vodka, vinegar, or sugar for bacteria that'll consume the nitrates and phosphates. Which are exported by your skimmer once they pass through the pellets. I don't doubt that it does what's advertised, but I don't think it's nearly as effective for phosphates as it is nitrates. I did get better polyp extension on my acro's but I also recently removed a nippy angel.

Where have you been hiding ??? LOL If I make the trip down Sunday can I come see your set up? I can bring a few frags and if you want them that is fine if not that is ok too. I wouldnt mind purchasing the SPS frags we discussed. Let me know..

Jason

Sure... I've always just kind of kept to myself with reef stuff. Just show me some pics of the stuff you want to bring. I'm picky... but we'll work something out.

obviously multi tasking last night...i haven't tried chemi pure. I am not sure how well it works at this point, but will try again.

Jabo: I think my skimmer is good, I just need to add a baffle in my sump to keep the water level stable. I have an ATO, but it lets the water drop quite a bit before it refills the sump. However, the efficency of the skimmer goes down significantly as the water level drops. I just need to see how it does with the modified sump. If I get that corrected and find I need to upgrade I will see about trying a larger one. thanks
