Chemical filtration

I have a new snowflake that has obviously increased my bioload. He's about 10" in a 55 g. Looking for ideas for chemical filtration in a canister. Ran chemipure elite in the past but didn't find it worked any better than carbon, which I run now. Suggestions to handle these messy eaters?

I would switch to a sump. Do you have other fish with him?
