Chemiclean/cyno

I finally decided to try Chemiclean for my cyno problem and it seems to have knocked it out for the moment. I dosed as the instructions said 2 days ago and just did a 20% was water change tonight. Attempted to turn the skimmer back on as well but it just overflows so i added some carbon. Other than Carbon what else should i do to return things to "œnormal" and get the skimmer back up and running?

You might restrict your air into the skimmer just a little, that will slow the skimmer down but maybe you could just empty the skimmer a lot over the next day or so. You could also do a bigger water change.

Just give it time.. My skimmer took 1 week to return to being usable at all.. and I was running carbon too..
I just left the drain tube on it open and let it dump water right back into the tank.. Or just take the cup or just lid off and let it overflow..

There is not need to rush it.. your tank is just fine without it removing skimmate for a week or so..

You need to figure out what caused the cyno otherwise you will have to dose chemiclean all the time

I don't know how new op's tank is, but doesn't cyano happen as part of new tank syndrome? My tank is coming up on a year and I had to use chemiclean about 6 months ago. I've had some issues since then (:headwallblue:) but no resurgence of cyano.

yes.. new tanks can get cyano.. Usually the last "ugly stage".. diatoms then green hair/film algae then cyano..

Yes but there are plenty of mature tanks that get cyno for one reason or another. Thats why bioballs are no longer widely used in tanks for instance. It can be common in new setups, but by no means do all new tanks get it.

I think it's more common with dry rock, I have been keeping reefs for 30 years and this latest go at it i started with dry rock to avoid pests (I do miss the pleasant surprises but I digress)

Anyway, I run a gynormous skimmer and low nutrient and low feeding and RO/DI only and had been overrun with cyano in both my 29 and again in the 135 when I transfered with new dry rock.

I used one of the chemipure type products and scrubbed the rock with a toothbrush and sucked away the cyano for the 20% WC then fresh filter sock. Seems to have cleared it up very nicely and the SPS I have fragged are healing over quite nicely.

I did run GFO for a day or two and had no real skimmer problems, I'm betting the skimmer is going nuts with all the bits and pieces of broken down cyano.

Good luck OP

Fivefivesix its funny you mention the dry rock because i have a combo of live and dry rock (Marco) in the tank. The cyno was only growing on the dry rock and not one but on the live rock. I will just let the skimmer overflow for now and check it to see if there is improvement. As far as the carbon goes should i change it out after a few days or just run with it?

I had it, and I didn't use any dry rock. It was mostly on my sand (which was live). I tried everything and it wasn't going away. I used the chemiclean and it's gone now. My LFS guy said if it comes back and is repeat issue then there is something wrong with my set up. Otherwise it was a normal part of the hobby.

I had my tank for 18 months, without ever having cyano. All of a sudden, my tank got full-on assaulted by it.

Used chemiclean a few months back, and haven't seen it since. Pretty sure it got introduced somehow. I have almost no algae issues, never really have, and my nutrient levels come up zero every time (API tests, but still). Despite a super-clean tank, it ran rampant.

Cyano comes hard and takes no prisoners. Sometimes ChemiClean and other products are the last stand, as it was for me. Tried everything, nothing worked. Sometimes it's necessary.

I'm using Red Slime Remover right now on my 20gal. I gave it 6 weeks trying to eradicate it without chemicals and it just stayed. Didn't get worse but wasn't getting better either. I just dosed a day ago. I'm going to dose again in 48 hours and then give it a week per the instructions. I don't use a skimmer so I don't know anything about that. I have used this in the past on a different tank and it got rid of the cyano never to be seen again. I'm hoping for the same results this time around as well.

Jlmawp thats pretty much where i am at too. Tried all the other methods that others recommend so this was pretty much my last resort. So far so good 72 hours in

Chemi clean is good stuff and always nips it in the bud.

I recommend a 50% or greater water change as most of the time it is a sign of getting behind the 8ball with your water quality.

Good to hear! It's such a relief. It took the corals about a month, but everyone recovered just fine.

If you are running fish only you can turn the lights off for a few days and kill it

When I got it, I hadn't been running any chemical filtration, so I added Phosguard, Carbon Matrix, and Purigen. I also went dark for 3 days (with softies and LPS). It disappeared, came back less strong, and then gradually faded away. I only lost a couple snails.
