Chevron or Kole tang

160g. reef- planning on getting a regal, yellow, and either a chevron or a Kole. Any feedback would be appreciated.

ime regal tangs won't eat algae but are great fish. yellow tangs are too aggressive for my taste, and chevron/kole will pick at algae on the rock all day and are a great fish.

Thank you- the question was: Kole or Chevron?

Kole don't get as large. Adult chevrons can be quite striking; black with tiny wavy green lines all over. I think they are about the same for aggressiveness.

They're both good fish. Probably, what you should think about is whether you want a 6" fish or a 10" fish when it grows up.

How about ease of acclimation, and prone to disease- is that also equal? I'm leaning towards the chevron. Thanks!

I would go with the Kole, chevron has a low success rate also consider the price tag. How many adults do you see in captivity. very pretty tang though.

Is it the difficulty of surviving shipping and acclimation at the beginning, or something else that makes him the less sucessful choice?

I don't have any experience with a Chevron Tang, but I've had a Kole Tang for about six months now. He's awesome! He's very friendly with my smaller tank mates (clowns and gobies) and will eat out of my hand. They might not be considered the most colorful of tangs, but his personality more than makes up.

He sounds great- how big is he? I love your little shrimp goby- I have one too - paired with a pistol shrimp. They're really interesting to watch!

I agree with the personality of the Kole. My Kole is very active and curious all the time. Likes to eat film like algae "bristle tooth". Great fish that loves to kiss the glass eating.

Chevron is a more difficult tang in my opinion never tried one because of the price tag. I have friends who have tried them I believe they come in and don't acclimate to tank life well. End up starving to death. If you do decide to go with one make sure you give it the extra attention it needs and make sure it eats.

Beautiful looking fish nate.

before buying a chevron or kole take a good look at its mouth I've seen alot with some kind of problem with their mouths (they damage easily)

What do I look for? I have read about them being damaged in shipment. I don't have the option of leaving it at the lfs until it feeds- as they go out as soon as they come in!

Their mouths can easily get damaged or disfigured which won't allow them to eat. I think the webwetmedia website has pictures of what to look for. Mine is about 4" or so, great fish.

Matt- how long did you have the chevron? Did you have any problems with acclimation, and did you quarantine first? Thanks, dawn.

I had the Chevron for a little over a year. I sold it back to my LFS when I broke down my tanks. I didn't QT, and it seemed to acclimate well. It accepted a wide range of foods. My LFS has had a Chevron in their main display (200+g) for about 8-9 years...just my .02

Get a tomini tang!! They are a bristletooth tang just like the Chevron and Kole tang, but they have different colors. They're kinda rare but they should be a little cheaper than the Chevron. Their colors also get better with age IMO.
