Chevron Tang

One of the things I love about this hobby is the opportunity to do something for the first time, no matter one's years in the hobby. Case in point: I just acquired my first Chevron Tang. Never had one before. Have kept just about every other one, short of a Gem. Chevron always seemed a bit on the pricey side, but all this recent noise about peppermint angels makes $200 or so look at bit like chump change.

Anyhow, my new guy, in QT, is about 3" long with his/her Juvi colors. For folks who have experience with that fish, how long can I expect to have before it gets it's adult coloration? I actually like both, but am curious.

I have been keeping Chevrons in my reef tanks constantly for the past 25 years. I have gone through many of them. I don't like the adult colors. So I would grow them up and then find them a new home.

I kept a 125 reef for 15 years before moving up to a 360 then 400. In the 125 they matured at a much slower rate. Some of them were Juvie colors for up to a year. In the 400 gallon they grow much quicker.

My last few have matured in probably 7-9 months.

I have kept them as singles, pairs and triples. Doesn't seem to affect the growth rate much.

I have a mature Chevron that I have had for several years now, and he survived my tank crash last fall. Last year I had a tiny juvie accidentally jump into my display tank. And amazingly the mature Chevron never even paid attention to the juvie. That juvie seemed to grow much slower.

I would say over the years I have easily kept probably 20 different Chevrons, and I have only had aggression issues from 1 or 2.

I really wanted a bristletooth for my tanks, and have grown rather bored with the Kole. I'll have to keep track of the transition. Its going to be in QT for at least 8 weeks, so I guess that will reduce the Juvi time.

Any pics of your adult by chance?

I also have an adult now I'd like to take out they can get brown and nasty dirt looking within year or 2

Honestly to me the adult colors are just icky, so I never take pics of the Chevron. Mine is one of the biggest fish in the tank, but he loves to hide under the island on the right side of the tank.

To find a photo of him, I had to look through my FTS to see if he happened to be out in any of them.

I've had mine for about a year. Pattern (I call them Tron lines) is still there but much more subdued. I think they're a great addition and gorgeous as adults.

I've had once for about two years now, came in as a tiny juvi. Grew up fast, no real aggression and good grazer. I saw one adult which was basically black with pin stripping, hoping mine ends us there from the correct very dark brown coloration.

OK, thanks folks. Got mine primarily for its grazing prowess. So far, eating like a piggie in QT.
