Please post your water params, including nitrate and phosphate levels. Your stocking list and feeding regimen would also be helpful, as well as a photo of the algae to confirm it's type, among other things. With this information, the folks here can probably point you in the right direction without a house call.

I dont live to far from you (around SW Hwy & Ridgeland) I gave up on my setup after battling the brown algae for 3 years. I have a friend that lives in Palos Hts. he had the same issue till he started buying his water.
I think it is something with the water supply and have heard it from others as well. I get brown slime in the toliet if it doesnt get used for a few days. I have a 6 stage RO/DI setup, tried halides, T5s, more light less light, this additive, that additive, water changes several times a week, etc, etc.
I had several different LFS test the water for and all parameters came back pointed that I shouldnt behaving any issues, nobody couldnt give me an answer.
I said enough was enough and took it down. If I get into reefs again, I will send my water supply off to lab to see what is in it to cause the issue.

I cut my feeding in half ( I was feeding 1 cube 2x's a week on Mon. and Thurs. Now I feed 1/2 cube 2x's a week, mon & thurs). I had redish/brown algae like crazy. Took a long time, about 2 months, but the problem took care of itself.
two fish, and most of my soft coral was overwelmed and died in the process.
IF you want your livestock to live, get a skimmer, and phospahte reactor, and probly set up an sump ASAP.
But these guys when knowing your parameters could give you a cheaper/better solution for your direct issue. Heck, it jsut may be your tank had a cycle of some sort, and patience is all you need.............

my cycle lasted for 3 years till i took it down!
Starve it out! run a massive amount of iron oxide, carbon, and skim heavy. If that doesnt help try out a biopellet reactor. There is no plant that you cant kill by starving the crap out of it and in this hobby you have the means to starve plants untill they die. Now if you rip all the nutrients out of your tank super quick you will hurt your corals. But at the end of the day desperate times call for desperate measures, IMHO there is no infestation that I can face that would cause me to pack up and quit.
