So - I've noticed there seem to be more guys than ladies here in SLASH (and in reefing as a whole... I wouldn't have guessed that at all when I started this hobby)...

So tell me - how many chicks are there in SLASH? I've noticed a few here on the boards... Chelsey and a few others...


Is it mostly guys?

I've noticed the same over the years. I am not sure why it is that way though. However, I have found that with building a house and all the trades people in, it is always the guys that notice the tank, woman just seem to walk right past it without a glance. Such a shame I think....

oops, Just noticed that your talking about the SL area. I am from Calgary, CAN...but yes, the same goes for here too.

Oh - I was talking about locally - but I have noticed it in general too!
 
I'm in the hobby with my boyfriend. You seem disappointed that there are not many women in the hobby (that you know of), but I would like to pose the question to all the women of this forum... how many are active hobbyists? How many of you are into the build and maintenance of your aquarium? How many of you have been to at least one Pizza Night to discuss not only the hobby, but to enjoy the company of others with similar interests? Not many. I have been to many a Pizza Night, being the only female around.

Well - I can only speak for myself... but as for your questions...

Yes - I'm an active hobbyist - I'm the only one in my family! So yes - I do ALL of the maintenance/building that goes on... Just did a lighting upgrade and it was my first DIY project and I'm pretty darn proud of myself! My hubby has zero interest in my tanks...

Now - on the other hand - I have NOT been to one pizza night yet :( I would love to come but haven't been able to come yet - and to be perfectly honest it's a little intimidating to not know one soul and just show up... Sure I'll have to do it sometime - but everyone here seems like such a tight knit group - that I figured I'd try to get to know some people on here first before I just show up and everyone's like 'who's this!'... I guess the pizza nights appear to me like friends getting together - and I'm not really a 'friend' yet? Does that make sence? I may just be rambling... Anyway - I would love to be a part of the pizza nights someday and then maybe you won't be the only female around!
 
Kim, just come to the pizza night next week, it will be worth it! We are laid back folks, definitely more guys than gals but that could change with more women coming around and getting others interested. I think the technology part intimidates some women and they are usually more into the biology part which is what it is all about really.

I could go on and on but don't want to bore you. Either way, Clayton Pet Emporium is one of the top LFS here in Saint Louis and Cicero's is nothing to sneeze at for pizza, plus they have a huge draft beer selection :beer:

Ok - I'll try to come - it'll really depend on my foot as I wasn't able to even go to work this week - but I should be able to next week and it sounds like fun!

Isn't Clayton Pet Emporium the place that has like zero parking?

I'll probably have to take it easy on the beer selection though since I'll still be left foot driving then!
 
They need to have a pizza night in Illinois. Being from Shiloh its a haul to get to the other stores. I wonder if Velko would help out.
 
I think they just had one a few months ago - right after I joined and when Velco set up the anemone tank... Right? I couldn't go that night - had a ladies night I had to attend!
 
Its a shame he got rid of the reef tank. What a spectical. He doesn't see to involved with the club stuff. He is getting more frags in there which is cool. Just picked up a hammer and galaxy frag for 25 each. I there was more events over here I would be more active. Wish we had an Illinois club as a sister club of SLASH.
 
Problem with Illinois is the lack of LFS. Markk96 was at Velko's a couple weeks ago and said the store was pretty empty. The other store (can't remember their name) snubbed us and never got in touch with Greg or myself after multiple attempts. They just didn't want or care to have us.

I have no problem going to Illinois, but there has to be something worth getting folks over there for, what you guys need is a LFS that can put its money where its mouth is;)

Or, if we can do a few tank tour, eat somewhere and call it a night since the LFS thing is not happening for you guys:(
 
BTW, I think there are many here in Saint Louis that love to go to the Illinois side, we just need to find something to do when we go there so it isn't the same ole same ole.
 
I think Velco's trying - He's rearranging again - got rid of the big anemone tank... I was in there today (while I was out practicing driving lefty style) and talked to him for a while. He has a lot of new stuff in and is trying to mix stuff up. I think he has a lot in the works - so maybe there'll be reason to come back over here again soon...

As for something different - how about rather than pizza - sushi! :lol:

There's something about going to see live fish - then going to eat raw ones! JK - I'm sure sushi is a bit to much for everyone - but there is a really good sushi restaurant over here...

I would offer a tank tour of here - but there's not much to see with my 30g and 14g! :lol:

I'm waiting to see your setup in person Dave!
