what would be a good chiller to buy to bring a 54 gallon tank down about 5 degrees...something cheap that is small but still of good quality..i dont have a sump on this tank so i would need to set it up to pump directly out of the tank into the chiller-out of the chiller into the tank...

Cheap and good quality usualy don't go together!

Check the Used Equipment & Drygoods Selling forum for used equipment.

JBL makes a decent chiller.

wasnt room for a sump, i am high shool student, not much cash...

Have you tried a fan blowing across the surface of your tank? There are some very good 1/10 HP units. Try Premium Aquatics, Marine Depot or any of the other RC sponsors.

yea, i thought about using a fan. didnt want to have to deal with the evap.

That is my issue here in Alaska and as my windows ice up bad eneogh as is I went with a chiller. If you can get by with a fan I would go with it versus a chiller. In either case I would try to regulate heat with a fan to see if it is posible. Then you will have a fallback plan if your chiller were to fail.
